SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,718, dated October 23, 1888.
Application filed May 31, 1888.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES NEWEILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trezevant, in the county of Carroll and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flows, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in plows; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a side view ofa plow embodying the invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of same. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the binding-yokeand connected parts detached.
The invention resides particularly in the devices and attachments whereby the colter is held to the plow-beam and rendered adjustable thereon. The invention also serves to protect the plow-beam from unnecessary wear.
Referring to the drawings by let for, A designates the plow-beam; A, the standard, secured to the heel of said beam, inclining downward and forward, and having a suitable share or blade, I), attached to its lower end; and C, the handles, secured to the sides of the standard and connected by a cross-bar near their upper ends in the usual manner.
D is a brace bar connecting the standard and plow-beam.
E is the eolter, of usual shape, and with its shank e passing through an opening in the plow-bean1 and inclining upward from front to rear.
F is a locking-block which lies upon the plow-beam, and is provided in its rear end with a notch, f, that fits upon the front edge of the coltershank. The said block curves upward, as at f, to its top, which is flat and nar row, and in front of the top is provided with the downwardly and forwardly inclined bear-- ing-surfacef from which stands forward the rectangular projection f, as shown, which projection prevents the binding-yoke from slipping off the block.

between which and the rear edge of the coltershank is situated the transversely'bent wearplate H, the upper part of which lies against the lower surface of the plow-beam, its lower part extending downward against the rear edge of the coltershank.
I is a binding-plate which lies against the bearingsurfacef of the locking-block, and is provided near its ends with perforations for the passage of the threaded ends of the legs g, that are engaged by the nuts'i on the outer side of the bindingplate. It is evident that when said nuts are turned up the bindingyoke will draw the front edge of the colter-shank against the lower end of the front edge of its opening through the plow, and the locking-block, being driven rearward, will force the rear edge of the colter-shank against the upper end of the rear edge of said opening, thus binding the colter firmly in place.
To change the position of the colter, loosen the nuts 2', slip the colter up or down to the desired position, and then tighten the nuts up again.
When the colter is first put in position, its shank is passed through the opening, the locking-block placed on the plow-beam with the edge of the colter-shank in the notch in its rear end, the wear-plate put in place, the bindingyoke placed against the said plate, and its ends passed through the perforations in the binding-plate in the bearing-surface of the lockingblock and the nuts screwed on.
Having described my invention, I claim- In a plow, the combination, with the colter E, of the locking-block F, provided with the notchf in its rear end, the bearing-surfacef and the projection f", standing forward from said surface, the binding-yoke G I, and the nuts z, engaging the threaded ends ofsaid yoke, substantially as specified.
