FLEXIBLE-BACK HORSE-BRUSH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,531, dated September 11 1888.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. SCOTT, of the city and county of Albany, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flexible-Back Horse-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in horse-brushes with flexible backs; and the object of my invention is to construct this class of brushes in such manner that they can, at the option of the user, be used with either a plane, a convex, or a concave brushing-surfa ce in the direction of their length. This object I attain by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which are herein referred to and form part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my brush arranged for a convex brushing surface; Fig. 2, a like view of the same with the brush arranged for a concave brushing-surface; Fig. 3,

a like View with the brush arranged for a plane brushing-surface; Fig. 4, a transverse section of Fig. 1 at the lineX X; Fig. 5, a perspective view of the spring detached from the brush;- Fig. 6, a vertical section of the clip for retaining the ends of the spring, and Figs. 7 and 8 are respectively a transverse vertical section and a longitudinal vertical section of a modi-- fied form of my brush.

As represented in the drawings, A is the flexible back-piece of the brush, which is preferably made of leather, and consists of a perforated section, 1, in which the bristles are secured in the usual manner, and an outer covering-section, 2, for producing asuitable finish for the back-piece and concealing the fastenings for the bristles. Near each end of the brush a clip, B, is secured to the upper face of the back-piece A, for the purpose of receiving the opposite ends of a spring, 0, and at the center of the back-piece a locking device, D, is fixed for holding the middle of said spring in place. Said locking device consists of a latch, 3, that is pivoted to a plate, 4, and a catch-piece, 5, in which said latch engages.

The spring C is bent to any required curve,

and is secured to the upper face of the backpiece A by having its ends inserted in the clips B, the latter having an end piece, 6, which prevents the end of the spring from protruding therefrom, and by having the locking device D fastened over its middle, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4.. By placing the spring C with its convex side next to the back-piece of the brush the brushing-surface will be retained in a convex form, as shown in Fig. 1. By placing the concave side of said spring next to the backpiece the brushing-surface will be held in a concave form, as shown in Fig. 2, and by omitting the spring the brushing-so rface will remain on a plane, as shown in Fig. 3. By these simple changes I virtually embrace three different forms of brushes in a single implement, each different form being especially adapted for use on some particular part of the animal. When preferred, the spring C, curved as shown and described, may be removably inserted in the back-piece A between the sections 1 and 2, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8; but in such cases a longitudinal pocket, 7, should be formed between said sections along the line of the greatest diameter of the brush.

I claim as my invention 1. A flexible horse-brush provided with a curved spring that is detachably connected to said brush, as and for the purpose herein speci fied.

2. The combination of a horse-brush having a flexible back-piece provided near each end with a spring-retaining clip and near its middle with a locking device, and a curved spring which is detachable from said brush, and which is retained in place by said clips and locking device, as and for the purpose herein specified.
