ll/l illlllllllllllll #2 VIII/1111112 MASCARA APPLICATOR This invention relates to a cosmetic device and, more specifically, to an improved mascara applicator.
The use of eye make-up has now become very common in the cosmetic treatment of the female face, and the application of mascara to eyelashes is an important part of such treatment.
The mascara applicators now in use fects and in most cases these defects are inherent in the structure of the applicator. In particular, these applicators tend to hold either too much or too little mascara. When too much is held, dripping may occur; while if too little is held, the applicator must be repeatedly dipped into the container to apply more mascara. Such dripping or redipping obviously increases the time spent in applying the mascara.
The brush-type applicator does not separate the lashes effectively, and the bristles of the brush tend to be damaged when the applicator is wiped, as when being drawn through a radial slit wiper, to remove any excess mascara.
have many de- While the use of comb-like applicators has eliminated some of the problems inherent in the brush-type applicators, the comb-like applicators do not hold sufficient mascara. Furthermore, when a com b-like applicator is used it is difficult to remove any droplets .of excess mascara which may adhere thereto by passing the applicator through a commonly used radial slit wiper. Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a mascara applicator which will hold the proper amount of mascara. lt is a further object of the present invention to provide a comb-like applicator which will hold a predetermined amount of mascara. It is another object of the present invention to provide a comb-like mascara applicator which can be easily wiped to remove excess mascara by passing through a radial slit wiper.
These and other objects will become apparent from a reading of the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.
The objects of the present invention are achieved by a mascara applicator comprising in combination an elongated supporting base; two'rows of comb teeth in integral construction with the base, the rows being in parallel relationship with each other to provide two parallel combs which together with the base portion form a trough; and an elongated handle portion extending from an extremity of the base.
The trough holds. the mascara, and the amount of mascara so held can be predetermined by the dimensions of the trough. lthas been found that a trough having a height of about 3mm, 21 width of about l-l .5mm. and a length of about 19-23mm will provide sufficient mascara for two applications, i.e. one tov each eye lash. Preferably, there are about 18 teeth in the row and each tooth'is about 0.5mm wide at its point of attachment to the base.
The outer surfaceportion of the-teeth and the base are shaped to form a unit which is substantially circular in cross section thereby facilitating the passage of the applicator through a radial slit wiper.
The base and handle portions may be of conventional materials such as wood, metal or plastic, preferably plastic. The base and handle portions are preferably integrally formed, or they may be manufactured separately and secured to one another by conventional means. i
In using the applicator, it has been found desirable to use one comb portion'to apply the mascara to one eye lash and the'second comb portion for the other eye lash.
BRIEF DESCRlPTlON-OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the mascara applicator.
FIG. 2 is a transverse cross-sectional view taken along theline 22 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a partial longitudinal cross-sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, reference numeral 10 generally indicates the mascara applicator. The applicator includes an elongated supporting base 11, two rows of comb teeth 12 and 13 in integral construction with the base, the rows being in parallel relationship with each other to provide two parallel combs which together with the base portion form a trough 14, the base portion of the applicator is attached to a handle 15.
We claim:
1. A mascara applicator comprising in combination a. an elongated supporting base and b. a handle extending from an extremity of the base,
said base having in integral construction therewith two rows of parallel teethto form two parallel combs, said combs and base forming a trough.
