CHECKREIN ATTACHMENT FOR HARNESS.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HIRAM J. WVING, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Checkrein Attachments for Harness, of which the following is a specification.

Oheckreins are usually provided with a leather eye at the end to hook over the checkrein-hook upon the saddle, and there is a mortise in said eye for the checkrein-strap to pass through; but this leather eye is liable to become unhookcd from the saddle, and the same is cumbersome and unsightly, and it is easily broken.

I make use of a folded leather loop, in combination with a metal frame having cheekpieces, between and to which the ends of the leather loop are fastened by a rivet or screw, and through which metal frame the overdraw checkrein passes, and the leather loop passes over the hook upon the saddle, and it lies flatwise around thesame and is not liable to become unhooked, and it takes an even bearing upon the hook.

In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the checkreinattachment, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.

The metal frameAis quadrangular and provided with the straight bar 2 for the leather checkrein B to pass around, and with the cheek-pieces 3 4-, between which the ends ofthe folded leather loop 0 are passed and secured by a rivet or screw, D, that passes through the cheekpieces 3 4 and through the leather of the loop 0. The cheek-pieces are adapted to receive the rivet or screw D, and the head of the rivet or screw is preferably rounding, so as to correspond, or nearly so, with the shape of the cheek-piece 3, that forms the nut for the screw D.

The hook E is represented as upon the saddie of the harness as usual, only a portion of the saddle being shown.

It is preferable to provide projections 5 6 on the opposite surfaces of the cheeks 3 and 4, and to notch the ends of the leather loop to prevent the leather loop turning upon the rivet or screw.

I am aware that a checkrein attachment has heretofore been made wherein there was a metal frame provided with a bar for the checkrein to pass around and a bar around which passed a loop of leather, the ends of which loop were fastened together and the loop adapted to pass over the saddle-hook; but this device is different from mine, and I disclaim the same.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the cheekrein B and saddle-hook E, of the quadrangular metal frame A, having a bar, 2, around which the rein passes, and cheek-pieces 3 and 4, and the folded leather loop 0, for the saddle-hook, and a rivet or screw passing through the cheeks and the folded strap and connecting the parts to gether, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, in a checkrein attachment, of a metal frame having a bar, 2, around which the rein passes, and cheek-pieces 3 4, and projections 5 6 on opposite surfaces of the said cheek-pieces, the folded leather loop 0, adapted to pass between the cheek-pieces and having its ends notched for the projections 5 6, and a rivet or screw passing through the cheek-pieces and folded loop 0 and connecting the parts together, substantially asset fOItll;
