Abstract
A compressed gas lighter in which the flame is stabilized against extinction by drafts or air currents by the provision of a member disposed over the burner outlet in the stream of emergent gas. This member can be a tongue whose free end is over the outlet.

UNITED STATES PATENTS 1 Claim, 1 Drawing Figure 2,823,519 2/1958 Spalding 431/350 1 COMPRESSED GAS LIGHTERS The present invention concerns improvements in compressed gas lighters and relates more particularly to means for stabilizing the flame.
The most well known means, for stabilizing the flame of a gas lighter apart from Windshields which only stabilize by protecting it externally, consists in axially dis posing, in the outlet aperture of the burner, a pin defining with this aperture a passage of ring-shaped section. This pin passes beyond the aperture which allows it to catch the flame and thus stabilize it.
One drawback of this device is that it catches the jet of gas whereas the inflammable mixture of air and gas is produced at the periphery of the jet of gas.
A second drawback of known pins lies in the fact that at the same time they constitute the closure member ensuring that the gas is cut off: the heat which they receive is therefore transmitted to the closure seal so that it is subjected to very harsh conditions which reduces the lifespan thereof.
To remedy these drawbacks, there is provided according to the invention, a compressed gas lighter comprising a stabilizing member not disposed in the outlet aperture of the burner, but downstream of this outlet,
in the stream of gas where the gas being discharged is already more or less mixed with combustive air.
In one embodiment of the invention, said stabilizing member is secured to a part of the lighter such that the heat it receives is discharged without being transmitted to the burner.
The accompanying FIGURE shows one embodiment of the invention by way of non-limiting example.
In the sole FIGURE of the drawing there is seen a stabilizing member constituted by a tongue (10) cut in a lever (11) controlling the gas outlet, this arrangement having the advantage of requiring no additional member, since the stabilizing member forms part of an already existing member, the heat received by the tongue (10) being discharged into the lever (11).
What is claimed is:
l. A compressed-gas lighter comprising a burner with an outlet for discharging a stream of combustible gas, and other stationary and movable parts inclusive of a lever controlling the gas outlet, said lighter further comprising a stabilizing member disposed downstream of said gas outlet in the gas stream where the latter is more or less mixed with the surrounding air, said stabilizing member being formed by an outwardly heat portion of said lever controlling the gas and forming a tongue portion extending above said lever and over said outlet outlet to allow the received heat to be discharged without passing through said burner.
