BOOM-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 383,594, dated May 29, 18818.
Application filed February 8, 1888. Serial No. 263.334. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY RUsHroN, of Canton, in the county of St. Lawrence and State oflNew York, have invented a new and Improved Boom-Fastening, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figurel is a perspective View showing the application of my improved boom-fastener. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the fastening, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the fastening-ring and a longitudinal section of the end of the boom.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the Views.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient boom-fastening which will take the place of the jaw on small craft, and which will be adapted to support sails that extend past the mast or from the mast aft.
My invention consists in a ring adapted to be received on the mast and provided with a pair of cars projecting from one side thereof, a swiveled clamp for receiving the boom when it is desired to extend the boom past the mast, and a spike to be driven into the boom to be used when the boom extends from the mast aft.
The ring A is provided with two apertured ears, a, projecting from one side thereof. The said ring is fitted to the mast B, and is held in place thereon by collars b,of leather or other suitable material. To the space between the cars a is fitted an eye, 0, the said eye being boom E is inserted a spike, F, which is provided with a rounded apertured head',f,which fits between the ears a of the ring A when the boom is to extend from the mast outward, the said spike being held in its position between the earsaby the spring-key a,passing through the ears and the spike. To prevent the springkey a from being lost,it is connected with the ring A by a chain, 9.
My invention not only permits the boom to work with perfect freedom in any necessary direction, allowing the boom to be topped up againstand parallel with the mast, but it prevents the boom from rising on the mast and thereby causing the sail to belly and spill the wind. \Vhile it firmly attaches the tack of the sail to the mast, it allows the removal of boom and sail instantly by simply withdraw ing the spring-key a.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A boom-fastening formed of the ring A, provided with the apertured ears a, the clamp D, provided with the eye 0 and adapted to re e ive the boom E, and the spring-key a, passing through said ears and eye and forming the pivot of said eye and clamp, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the mast B and boom E, of the collars b, encircling the mast, the ring A, provided with apertured ears a and received on the mast B between the collars b, the clamp D, adapted to receive and clamp the boom E and provided with the eye 0, pivoted between the ears a and upon the spring-key a, and the spike F, inserted in the end of the boom and provided with a rounded apertured head,f, substantially as herein shown and described.
