UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEQ \VILLIAM ROEMER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
BAG OR SATCHEL FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,324, dated December 6, 1887.
Application filed May 14. 1887. Serial No. 238.171. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, WILLIAM ROEMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag or Satchel Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art-to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in fastenings for that class of satchels in which the jaws which open to allow articles to be inserted are pivoted at the upper and outer corners of the bag-body, so that when closed together the side portions of the said jaws lie in horizontal positions, or positions approximately horizontal, the object of the invention being to allow the overlapping jaw of the frame to close over the inner or under jaw without striking the hasps or the tongues, which are adapted to enter the ordinary lock and engage with the sliding spring-actuated bolt found therein, as it would were the said hasp or tongues rigidly secured upon the said inner or under jaw in the usual manner.
The invention consists in the improved fastening for bags and satchels and in a bag or satchel providedwith said fastening, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally be embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bag provided with an improved fastening device. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views of one of the members of the improved fastening, showing slight variations in the construction of the same.
In said drawings, a indicates the body of the bag. b and b are the upper longitudinal portions of the jaw-sections, and b are the side portions of said sections, which side portions are pivoted to the bag at the upper and outward corners thereof, as at b in any ordinary manner.
To the upper or overlapping sections, b,of the longitudinal portions of the frame is secured an ordinary lock, 0, having within the same the usual spring-actuated bolt, adapted to engage the hasp or cooperating catch portion d. The said hasp or co operating portion 6 is pivoted opposite said look upon the under or inner sections, b, of the frame opposite the said lock 0, and is provided with a notched tongue or tongues, 6, adapted to enter into engagement with the said sliding bolt, the said tongue when in that position projecting over the said section b, where the cooperating catch d is rigidly secured upon the frame-section b, so that the tongue elies in a proper position to lock with the sliding bolt. It is evident that in closing down the outer section of the bag it would strike the, said tongue and thus be obstructed, and the complete closing of the bag would be prevented or greatly hindered.
In the improved device the cooperating catch d, which we may call the hasp, is pivoted upon the sections b, as before indicated, whereby it may be thrown back, as indicated in dotted line, Fig. 2, prior to closing the upper section, and after the upper section or portion I) is drawn upon the under section or portion I) the said hasp may be turned back into locking engagement with the lock 0,- but pro for to provide the catch or hasp d with a plate or plates, f, which are riveted rigidly upon the section or portion 1), said plates being provided with ears f, to which the hasp carrying the tongue 6 is pivoted. The tongue or tongues e are notched, as at g, and inclined, as at g, to automatically force back the springactuated bolt when the said hasp is turned into engagement with the locki Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The combination, with the bagbody a, frame portions I) and b and b and a suitable lock, 0, of a hasp, d, pivoted upon said portion I) opposite said lock, and provided with tongues 6, adapted to engage the ordinary springbolt of said lock, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a satchel, the improved hasp d, pivoted upon a plate, f, adapted to be secured to the section or portion b opposite the lock 0, and provided with a. notched and inclined or beveled tongue, 6, adapted to engage the ordinary spring-bolt of said look to co-operate 5 therewith in looking the jaw-sections together, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of May,1887.
WM. ROEMER.
