IJNITED STATES PATENT F F ICED JOHN MILTON KELLY, OF WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO HENRY MORRIS, OF SAME PLACE.
LETTER AND BILL FILE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No.372,983, dated November 8, 1887,
Application filed April 1, 1887.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN MILTONKELLY, a resident of the city of Wheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Letter and Bill Files; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, whichform a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of letter and bill files that are made in the form of a book cover or binder, having aseries of hooks secured to theinside of the cover, upon which the papers are hung and retained in place.
The object of my invention is to provide a file in which the hooks are fastened to a detachable plate or rack, made removable, in or-- der that the same, together with the papers thereon, may be removed and filed away and another rack substituted in its place, thus obviating the necessity of procuring another binder when the one in use is full of papers.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an inside view of the file; Fig. 2, a transverse section.
The letter A designates a metallic spring back or case, made preferably of sheet metal,
. containing the hock-rack and clamping-plate for holding the papers in place. i
B B are the covers attached to the back in the usual manner, and maybe of paper-board or other suitable'material.
G is a hook-rack consisting of an angleiron or plate of sheet metal, to which is attached a series of books, D. This plate is secured in position on the inside of the case by a small ringbolt, E, which passes through an opening in the side of the case and through the plate on the inside, having prongs a a, adapted to being opened outward and bent back against the side of the plate in the manner of a paper-fastener. Attached to the bolt on the outside of Serial No. 233,293. (No model.)
the case is a ring,F, by means of which the file can be hung upon the wall forconvenience and ready reference. G is a spring-actuated clamping-plate for holding the papers in place on the hook-rack. One edge of the plate is secured to a rod, 0, which passes through the case and is pivoted at each end to the ends of the case. This rod is curved from a straight line at d d to form cams for the springs to press against to hold the clamping-plate either against or away from the hook-rack, as desired.
b b are the springs securely fastened in position near the ends of the case A. These springs, aside from holding the clamping-plate, 6o
also abut against the hook-rack O, and serve also to hold it in place in conjunction with the fastening device E in the center of the plate.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a letter and bill file, a removable hookrack consisting of an angle-plate, 0, having hooks D secured thereto, substantially as de scribed.
2. The combination, with the metallic back A,ofthe removable hook-rack G, and fastening device E, having a ring, F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth..
3. The combination of the metallic back A, covers B B, removable hook-rack O, fastening device E, ring F, springs 12 b, and clampingplate G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In combination withthe angle-plate G, having hooks D, the clamping-plate G, and spring 1), bearing upon each end thereof, sub stantially as described.
In testimony that I do claim the foregoing as my own I hereby affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN MILTON KELLY. Witnesses:
JOHN S. KENNEDY, A. J. Pnn'rnoosr.
