Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, HERMAN C. SGHELTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Glarus, in the county of Green, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Letter or the like Files; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in letter iles or binders.

One object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, useful and effective in operation, and which can be manufactured and sold at a low ligure.

Another object is to provide a device of this character which will contain a large number of letters, bills, receipts, and the like, and which is provided with novel and efcient means for retaining the papers in proper position therein.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.

Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved file in open position.

Fi 4 is an enlarged longitudinal sectiona view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.

Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing 10 represents the back of the file which is formed of cardboard, or other suitable stiff material, the same being doubled on itself, along the intermediate line 11, to form a hinge, thereby simulating a book.

A strip of suitable metal, such as brass, and represented by the reference character 12, is formed with elongated and longitudinally extending tongues 13, struck up from the body of the strip. These tongues are passed through the inner edge of one of the sections of the back, near the hinge thereof, and bent flatly against the outer face thereof. Thus the strip is secured in position on the back of the file. Additional tongues 14, are similarly formed and struck up from the strip, but instead of being passed through the back, are disposed inwardly thereof in position to be impaled through letters, receipts, bills, or other like papers which it is desired to keep within the file. These latter tongues are adapted to be bent up to receive the letters or papers thereon, then bent down again to hold the papers against being lost.

It will be understood that the le will be made in different sizes, from those used in oiices, to the small ones adapted to be carried in the pocket. The back of the ile may be made of any cheap material, as will also the strip secured therewithin, so that the device can be cheaply manufactured, and sold at the live and ten cent stores, at a profit.

What is claimed is:

The combination with a backing, of a fastening metal strip having at each end a pair of tongues struck therefrom with a single resultant opening, the tongues passing through the backing and extending from the opening in opposite directions in the form of oppositely opening hooks, the strip having additional tongues struck therefrom between said pairs of tongues and extending from the strip at the opposite side from the backing.
