(NoiModeL) H. J. BREWER.
GALVANIG'BATTERY. No.- 367,359. Patented Aug. 2, 1887.
C/ .Z' I
WITNESSES: INVHNTOR ATTORNEYS.
U ITED STATES HORATIO J. BREWER,
PATENT QFFICEQ' OF NEW YORK, N. Y}.
GA LVANIC BATT E RY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 367,359, dated August 2, 1887.
' Application filed August 2, 1886. Serial No.209,753. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HORATIO J. BREWER,Of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Battery, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description. 7
. The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved battery, in which the evaporation of the liquid used is prevented, and which saves a considerable amount of the zinc, and in which the poles of the battery are firmly heldin placeihthe bottom ofthe jar.
The invention consists of a porous cup having a flange resting on a shoulder formed in thejar, of means for holding the porous cup and the zinc bar in place at the bottom of the jar, and of a zinc barpassingthrough the side -of thejar.
The invention also consists of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure represents a sectional side elevation of myimprovement. V
The jar A is providednear its upper edge with an inwardly projecting shoulder, B, which forms a support for the flange 0, formed on the upper end of the porous cup D, and being of the same material as the said cup D. A rubber ringor gasket, E, is interposed between the shoulder B of the jar A and the flange O of the porous cup D. The zinc bar F passes from the inside of thejar A,with its upper end through an aperture, A, formed in the side of the jarA below the shoulder B. A packing, G, of rubber or other suitable material, surrounds the zinc bar F at the aperture A, so that the latter is tightly closed by the said packing G. The lower end of the porous cupD and the zinc bar F are embedded in a layer, H, of plastefi-ofiparis,cement,or other similar material placed in the bottom of the jar A. V
In manufacturing the battery, I place the prepared soft cementing material H in the bottom of the jar A, and then insert theporous cup D and the zinc bar F into the jar, so that their lower ends press into the layer H. The latter is then left to dry, whereby it becomes hard, and the cup D and the zinc bar F on being withdrawn leave an impression in the cementing material H, which forms a bed for the lowerends of the said cup and the zinc bar. Instead of the porous cup being em-' bedded at its lower ends in the material H, other poles of the battery may be embedded in a similar manner in the material H.
It will be seen that as the upper end of the jar is sealed by the flange O of the porous cup D the liquid in the jar is prevented from rapid evaporation or from spilling when moving the jar from place to place, and a considerable amount of zinc is saved by passing the zinc bar F through the side of the jar instead of extending the bar to the top, as has been done heretofore.
The rubber ring or gasket E forms a tight joint between the flange 0 of the porous cup D and the shoulder B ofthe jar, and thus pre vents a rapid evaporation of the liquidin the Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In-a battery, the combination of a jar having a shoulder near its upper end, with a porous cup having a flange, and a gasket interposed between the said shoulder of the jar and the flange of the cup, to form a tightjoint between the said shoulder of the jar and the flange of the cup, so as to prevent the evaporation of the liquid in the jar, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a battery, the combination of a jar with a zinc bar passing through the side of the said jar, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a battery, the combination of a jar having an aperture in its side,wit-h a zinc bar passing through the said aperture, and apacking surrounding the said zinc bar at the said aperture, substantially as shown and described.
4:. In a battery, the combination of ajar,-a cementing material placed in thebottom of the jar and having recesses or indentations, with a porous cup and zinc bar placed in the said jar, and held loosely with their lower ends in the said recesses or indentations formed in the cementing material, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. In abattery, the combinatiomwith ajar,
too
A, having an aperture, A, in its side, and packing G, surrounding the zinc bar F at the provided with a shoulder, D, and a cementing aperture A, substantially as shown and dematerial, H, placed in the bottom of said jar, scribed.
of the porous cup D, provided with the flange HORATIO J. BREWER. 5 C, the gasket E, interposed between the said XVitnesses:
shoulderB and the flange O, the zinc bar F, Trmo. G. Hos'rER,
passing through the side of thejar A, and the G. SEDGWICK.
