Patented Mar. 13, 1891g- A` 1%, www ff@ UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
MORRIS GOLDWATER, OF FRESOOTT, ARIZONA TERRITORY.
TOBACCO-JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,303, dated March 13, 1894.
i Application filed May 3, 1893. `Serial llo. 472.852. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, MORRIS GOLDWATER, of Prescott, in the county of Yavapai and Territory of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Jars and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
This invention relates to an improved jar for holding tobacco.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and simple contrivance which will serve to keep the tobacco fresh and moist for an indefinite time.
With this object in View, my invention consists of a glass, china, or metal jar, adapted to hold a certain amount of water, and a porous lining or cylinder which is placed within the main or outer jar, and is intended to receive the tobacco. A cover is also employed, and it is provided with a spring follower to hold the tobacco within the inner cylinder.
My invention consists also in certain details of construction, all of which will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a central vertical section of my improved device, and Fig. 2, is a detail view of the top. Fig. 3 is a section on the line :Jo-oo Fig. l, showing the follower held within the cover."
In carrying out my invention, I employ an outer jar A, of glass, china, metal or oth er suitable material, capable of holding water. This jar is formed with a broad fiat base, and at its upper end is formed with a shoulder a.
a is a water mark made upon the jar to which the water should come before inserting the inner lining or cylinder. This lining or cylinder B, is of porous material, and is formed with an annular flange b, which rests upon a shoulder ct, and is thus supported, and makes the annular chamber around said jar air-tight.
The cover C, may be of any suitableqnaterial, and tightly fits the jar. To the bottom of this cover is attached a spiral spring c, and upon its lower end .is secured a circular follower c', which is adapted to bear upon the tobacco within the lining .or cylinder.
c2 c2 indicate the hooks which are secured to the cover, and are intended to hold the follower c raised when the jar B, is full.
In operation, water is poured into the jar A, until it reaches the mark a. The lining or cylinder is then inserted, and tobacco put therein. The cover is then replaced, and as the lining or cylinder is porous, the tobacco within the same will always be kept fresh and moist. v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isp A tobacco holder comprising a jar adapted to hold water, a porous lining or cylinder mounted in said jar to receive the tobacco, a
' cover tting the jar to close the same, a spring secured to the said cover at its upper end and having a follower attached to the lower end thereof, and hooks in connection with said cover holding the follower in elevated position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specilication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MoRRIs GOLDWATER.
