Abstract

In certain oil burners the valve opens by an outward movement of the valve body against the action of an interior spring. This spring is now located outside the oil passage to facilitate adjustment when changing oil type.

J J l all WWW/' b- I M' w il W OIL ATOMXZATHON BURNER The invention relates to an oil atomization burner of the kind having an outwardly openable spring-activated valve body mounted in the mouthpiece.
With such burners the volume of the flame, and consequently the capacity, may be varied during operation by varying the pressure at which the oil is fed to the burner.
With the known burners the type of fuel oil can only be changed with great difficulty, because this will usually require a re-adjustment of the spring pressure, which is very difficult to make, because the spring is located inside the oil chamber of the burner casing.
The object of the invention is to facilitate the re-adjustment of the valve spring so that the burner may readily be re-adjusted to operate with a different fuel oil.
According to the invention the valve spring is provided in the rear end of the burner casing outside the oil passage. By adjusting that part of the rear end of the casing against which the spring is abutting, the spring tension may be adjusted to operate with a different fuel oil, just as the spring may be adjusted during operation so as to achieve maximum effect. The spring, which in known manner acts to close the valve, acts on an extension of the valve spindle which is passed out through the rear end of the burner casing.
According to the invention the valve spring may abut against a helical body adjustably mounted in the rear end of the burner casing, which provides a very simple adjustment of the valve spring.
According to the invention the rear' end of the burner casing may have the form of a cup in which the helical body is resting; further, the said body may also be cup-formed and wholly surround the spring, which in addition to simple adjustment of the spring provides an efficient outer protection of same.
Furthermore, according to the invention the edges of the two cup-formed parts may have knurled parts of the same diameter as a knurled knob which forms the rear end of the extension of' the valve spindle outside the valve casing. The three knurled surfaces constitute in combination a convenient operating unit of the burner.
The rear end of the burner casing may according to the in vention have a lock nut part for retaining the adjustable part in any desired adjusted position, by which an unintended readjustment of the spring tension during operation is prevented.
The drawing shows an axial section through an oil atomization burner according to the invention.
Oil fed through a passage l provided in the casing 2 of the burner flows into a chamber 3 around a valve spindle 4 having a rearwardly directed extension 5. The valve has at its front end a conical body 6 resting on a correspondingly formed seat at the end of the chamber 3, and behind the valve body the spindle 4 carries a helically formed body 7 which causes the oilflow to perform a circulating movement.
Oil is fed to the passage ll through a pipe (not shown) at a pressure sufficient to cause the valve body to open just enough to ensure a flame of the desired length. By variation of the oil pressure it is possible to vary the length of the flame and consequently the capacity of the burner. lf the oil pressure drops below a definite value, the valve will close by the action of a helical pressure spring 9 provided around the rear end 8 of the extension 5. The said spring 9 is inserted between the bottom l0 of a cup-formed part l2, which has a threading l1 and is screwed into the rear part ll3 of the burner casing. The spring 9 is further resting against a pressure disc M which presses against a pair of lock nuts l5 provided on the extension 5,8 the rear end of which is passed out of the oil chamber 3 through a pair of oil seals 16.
By turning a knurled edge 17 provided on the end of the part l2 the said part may be displaced lengthwise in the part 13, whereby the tension of the spring 9 may be regulated,
When switching over to operation with a different fuel oil, the tension of the spring 9 may prior to or during this operation be adjusted in such manner that a definite desired volume of flame corresponds to a given oil ressure.
The knurled edge 19 of the part 3 may consist of a separate ring which constitutes a lock nut with the part 13 for locking of the part l2 in any desired position.
If any impurities should deposit in the valve so that it cannot close completely, the valve may readily be blown clean by the operator pressing a knurled knob 18 provided on the end of the extension 5,8. The said extension 5,8 may incidentally be turned, but not displaced lengthwise, independently of the spindle 4.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An oil atomization burner comprising a burner casing having a rear portion which encloses a valve spring and a forward portion which includes an oil passage, which oil passage does not communicate with said rear portion, one abutment of said valve spring being formed by a portion of a manually adjustable cup-shaped member having an outer tread, which is adjustably screwed into a cup-shaped part of said rear portion of said casing, said cup-shaped part having an inner threading.
2. The burner of claim l further comprising a valve spindle located in said forward portion of said casing and an extension of said valve spindle located in said rear portion of said casing, the second abutment of said spring comprising lock nut means mounted on said extension.
3. The burner of claim 1 wherein said cup-shaped part further includes lock nut means for locking said manually adjustable cup-shaped member.
4.- The burner of .claim 3 wherein said manually adjustable cup-shaped member includes a knurled knob.
5. The burner of claim 3 wherein said valve spindle has a valve body on the forward end thereof which cooperates with said forward portion of said casing to control the flow of oil.

Claims (5)

1. An oil atomization burner comprising a burner casing having a rear portion which encloses a valve spring and a forward portion which includes an oil passage, which oil passage does not communicate with said rear portion, one abutment of said valve spring being formed by a portion of a manually adjustable cupshaped member having an outer tread, which is adjustably screwed into a cup-shaped part of said rear portion of said casing, said cup-shaped part having an inner threading.
2. The burner of claim 1 further comprising a valve spindle located in said forward portion of said casing and an extension of said valve spindle located in said rear portion of said casing, the second abutment of said spring comprising lock nut means mounted on said extension.
3. The burner of claim 1 wherein said cup-shaped part further includes lock nut means for locking said manually adjustable cup-shaped member.
4. The burner of claim 3 wherein said manually adjustable cup-shaped member includes a knurled knob.
5. The burner of claim 3 wherein said valve spindle has a valve body on the forward end thereof which cooperates with said forward portion of said casing to control the flow of oil.
