WHIFFLETREE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,314, dated June 7, 1887.

Application filed January 13, 1887. Serial No. 224,190. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

' Be it known that 1, WILLIAM SOUTHWICK, of Gordon, in the county of Essex and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented new and usefulImprovements in W'hiffletrees; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of whiffletrees of that class which are designed to spring or yield, and thus render the starting of a load more easy upon a horse.

The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the whiflletree, as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, my invention is shown in elevation and as attached to the shafts of a cart, and in which A represents the whiflietree proper, which is pivotal] y secured in any convenient manner to the draw or cross bar ofthe shaft. This whiffletree is constructed,

preferably, of steel, and at its longitudinal and in this peculiar construction lies the gist of my invention.

By this construction a whiffletree is pro vided which has suiiicient elasticity in it to materially lessen the liability of injury to the horses shoulders in starting a load and in drawing the same, as the resiliency of the spring will keep the traces taut under all ordinary circumstances and prevent the jerky motion that is derived from the use of a stitf whiiiietree.

I am aware of the Patent No. 225,250, and make no claim to the construction shownthcrei n as forming part of my invention, but limit myself to my peculiar construction, attaching importance t0 the form of the whifflctrec shown and above described.

\Vhat I claim as my invention is The whiffletree described, formed of a single piece of steel having a straight side,l,enlargeinent a, substantially in its center, upon the side opposite the said straight side, and the spring-arms b, the sides of which are parallel from the points 0 to their ends, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified. v
