BOTTLE STOPPER.
Patented Apr. 19, 1887.

ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWVARD H. RICE, OF MENDOTA, ILLINOIS.
BOTTLE-STORPPER.
SPECIIIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,547, dated April 19 1887.
Application filed February 26, IP87. Serial No. 228,925..
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. RICE, of Mendota, in the county of La Salle, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to bottle-stoppers; and
it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings Figures 1 and 2 represent perspective views of a portion of a bottle having my stopper applied thereto; Fig. 3, a vertical transverse section of the same, and Fig. 4 a top plan view.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents the neck of a bottle, and to this neck is wired or otherwise suitably secured a bail, B, having a bent-down transverse portion, a.
The stopper for the bottle comprises aplate, O, that has extending from its upper and lower sides stems c d, the former one of these stems being provided with a slot, 0, that engages the bent transverse portion of the bail, while the latter stem has secured thereto an ordinary flanged disk of rubber orother suitable material, e, such as is generally employed on the style of bottle-stoppersto which my invention relates.
Loosely arranged on the slotted stem 0 of the stopper is a ring, D, that is provided with flanges f, of even height throughout, but which are eccentric in a horizontal plane, to thus present an even bearing-surface against the bentportion a of the bail B, and projecting from these flange-pieces are thumb-pieces g, by which said ring is turned.
The flanges f on the ring D are diametrically oppos'ed to each other, and being eccentrio in a horizontal plane the diameteris least between the points where the thumb-pieces g join said flanges and greatest between the points farthest from these thumb-pieces.
In the operation of my invention, the several parts being in their relative arrangement, the flan'gesf on the ring D are brought under the bent bail B by a movement of said ring in a direction from left to right, the diameter between these flanges being gradually less- (No model.)
ened as the thumb-pieces g approach toward said bail, the pressure being on the plate 0 of the stopper in proportion to this decreasing diameter.
As the diameter between the flanges on the .ring D decreases, the flange of the elastic portion e of the stopper is compressed in proportion to the pressure exerted thereon, the slotted stem 0 of said stopper permitting the vertical movement of the latter to accomplish the desired result, and it will be noticed that the bearing between the bail and the flanges on the loose ring is even and continuous.
By the employment of a bottle-stopper constructed according to my invention I get a greater pressure on the elastic portion of said stopper, and the latter can always be made tight, even after it becomes old and hard, and
I therefore overcome the great objection to ordinary bottle-stoppers now in common use. The invention above described and now to be claimed is an improvement on the device covered by Letters Patent No. 353,590, dated 2. The combination, with abottle, of a stop per provided with a slotted stem, a loose ring arranged on the stem and having flanges of even height throughout, but eccentric in a horizon tal plane, thumb-pieces projecting from these flanges, anda bail suitably secured to the bottle and having a bent-down transverse portion that engages said slotted stem of the stopper, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, witha bottle, of a bearing-plate having a slotted stem, an elasticstopper secured to the plate, a ring loosely arranged on the stem and provided with flanges of even height throughout, but eccentricin a horizontal 1 plane, and a bail suitably secured to the bot- ICO tie and having abent-down transverse portion In testimony that I claim the foregoing I that engages said slotted stem of the stopper, have hereunto set my hand, at Mendota, in the as and for the purpose set forth. county of La Salle and State of Illinois, in the 4. lhe eombination, with abottle, of a stoppresence of two Witnesses. 5 per comprising the plate 0, having the stems c d, and the elastic disk 6, secured to the latter EDWARD I-I. RICE. stem, the loose ring 1), having the flanges f, provided with thumb-pieces g, and the bail B, "Witnesses: having its transverse portion a engaged by a- F. P. SNYDER, [0 slot in said stem 0, substantially as and for th JOHN C. MoKEoN.
purpose set forth.
