J. W. GIBSON.
'DEVIGE-POR CLEANING GHIMNEYS. N0.3 61,502. Patented Apr. 19, 1887.
N. P'ETERS, mom-mm n hw. Wahington, D. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. GIBSON, OF RIVER FALLS, \VISGONSIN.
. DEVICE FOR- CLEANING CHIMNEYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,502, dated April 19, 1887.
Application filed April 27, 1886. Serial No. 200,379. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. GIBsoN, of River Falls, in the county of Pierce and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Cleaning Chimneys; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same. 1
My invention relates to devices for cleaning chimneys, the object being to provide a device of this character that will be adapted for use in connection with chimneys of different sizes.
A further object of my invention is to provide a chimney-cleaner that may be operated from the top of the chimney, and one that may belowered into a chimney in a contracted position and then drawn out expanded, thus making its operation less difficult and more eifective.
The invention consists in combining, with a center rod, brushes or scrapers radially "arranged thereto and having connections with said rod.
The invention further consists in combining, with the center rod and spring-arms provided with brushes or scrapers, adjustable connections between said center rod and spring-arms and means for lowering the device into 'a chimney.
The invention further consists in the details 7 of construction and combination of parts,
hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring now to the drawing, which illustrates a perspective view of my invention, A represents the spring arms. To the lower ends of said spring-arms the brushes B and scrapers B are secured by the clamps G,which pass through the plates secured to the back of the brushes or scrapers, and bear against the ends of the spring-arms A.
I have illustrated in the drawing the brushes and scrapers alternately secured to the springarms; but as the connections are the same in both instances, with but very little trouble-I can change the relative positions of the said brushes or scrapers, or may use either brushes or scrapers separately without departing from the aim of the invention.
To the outer sides of the spring-arms A the stops I are secured, preferably at a point between the center and the top of the arms. The spring-arms A are turned to form loops at the top, and are loosely connected or heldtogether by a link, H, passed through the said loops. The braces E are formed on their outer ends with perforations, which admit of the passage of the spring-arms through them, but abut against the stops I on said arms. The inner ends of the braces E are bifurcated,-and said bifurcated portions embrace the lower end of the rod D. The rod is formed with a loop at its upper end, and with a head and a screw-threaded portion on its lower end. The head supports the braces, while a thumb-screw, F, ori the threaded portion of the rod holds the braces E in their adjusted position. To the upper end of the rod D the rope O is attached and to the link H another rope, G, is attached.
The operation is as follows: The braces E are adjusted, and the person operating the device catches hold of the rope 0, thereby drawing the spring-arms A, brushes B, and scrapers B up and in a contracted position. The device is then lowered into the chimney to be cleaned in the contracted position, which is necessarily smaller than the chimney. After the device has been lowered far enough the operator looses his hold on the rope O, and catches the rope 0 instead, and by so doing the spring-arms and their attachments drop and assume an expanded position, the cleaning devices bearing against the sides of the chimney, and in this position the device is drawn out of the chimney, thereby cleaning the chimney.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'1. In a device for cleaning chimneys, the combination, with a rod and with spring-arms loosely connected at their upper ends and provided with cleaning attachments, as described, of bifurcated braces connecting said rod and arms, a clamp for securing the said braces, and suspending devices, one for lowering the device into and the other for raising the device out of a chimney, substantially as described.
2. In a device for cleaning chimneys, the combination, with a rod and with spring-arms loosely connected together at their upper ends and provided with cleaning devices, of braces connecting said rod and arms, the inner ends of said braces being bifurcated and the outer ends adapted to abut against stops secured to [0 the spring-arms, a clamp for securing said braces, and suspending devices for lowering the device into and raising it out of a chimney, substantially as described.
