UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. STEINER, 0F NEW HOLSTEIN, WISCONSIN.
CHIMNEY-CLEANER.
Application led November 18, 1915.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. STEINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Holstein, in the county of Calumet and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney- Cleaners, of which the following is a specifcation.
This invention relates to improvements in chimney cleaners and more particularly to chimney cleaners that ar'e adjustable to fit chimneys of various diameters, and its object is to produce a device that is simple in construction and operation and whereby the interior of a chimney may be readily scraped and cleansed of soot and ashes without in any Way interfering with the ordinary use of the chimney.
With the foregoing and other objects in View the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which forin a part of said specification l and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View through a chimney equipped With my improved cleaner, and it is taken on line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a fragmental end view of the chimney. Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view of the cleaning member. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same.
Like reference characters indicate corre sponding arts throughout the several views.
The re erence numeral 1 denotes a chimney of ordinary construction to which my improved cleaner is shown applied. My cleaner comprises the adjustable frame formed of U-shaped sides 2, 3 connected by slotted braces 4, said frame being secured to the top of the chimney by the supports 5; and the frame 6 arranged within the chimney near the base thereof and connected to the chimney by the adjustable supports 7. Shafts 8 carried -by the said frames carry sprocket wheels 9 connected by sprocket chain 10 to which the casting is secured that is formed with radial arms 12 that at their ends are connected to the ,longitudinally slotted braces 13 that are adjustably bolted to the corner irons 14 that, with said braces form a central frame for the scraper.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1916.
serial No. 62,185.
To the corner irons, bolts 15 are secured that connect the same with metal plates 16 and Springs 17 encircling said bolts 15 abut said plates and corner irons. The plates 16, further are connected by bolts 18 with angle irons 19, 20 which are slotted, respectively, as at 21, 22 to permit their relative movement upon the connecting bolts 18 for purposes of adjustment, the said angle irons 19, 2O forming an exterior frame which surrounds the previously described frame and comprises the scraping element. It is readily seen that the exterior frame is quickly adjustable to fit chimneys of a variety of diameters and that the spring and bolt connection between the outer and inner frames keep the same yieldingly spaced from each other to permit the sides of the outer' frame tofrictionally engage the inner perimeter of' the chimney. One of the shafts 8 aforesaid is provided with a handle 23 whereby it is rotated to effect movement of the sprocket chain and consequent movement of the cleaner longitudinally of the chimney.
What is claimed is 1. In a chimney cleaner, an outer frame comprising overlapping members slidably connected, plates adjustably connected to said members, an inner frame supporting 3. In a chimney cleaner, an outer frame comprising overlapping lateral portions slidably connected, plates adjustably connected to said lateral portions, an inner frame comprising lateral portions arranged in parallelism Wlth the lateral portions of said outer frame, means connecting said plates with the said lateral portions of thev inner frame for yieldingly spacing them away from each other, a central frame army own I have hereto axed my signature ranged W1th1n sald lnner frame and com- 1n the presence of two subscrlbmg Witnesses. prlslng radlal arms connected to the corners of said inner frame, and manually operable JO'HN J STEINER 5 means engaging said central frame for recip- Witnesses:
rocating the same. A. P. BAUMANN,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as M. E. MCMULLE'N.
