STOP-COCK BOX FOR WATEROR GAS PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,696, dated March 1, 1887.
Application filed A piil l7, 1884.
.To all whom, it may concern;
Be it known that we, LoUIs P. Bnrorrnnr and ANDREW FULLER, both of the city of Bu ffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stop-(Jock Boxes for XVater and Gas Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in the extensible or telescopic tubular boxes which are placed in the ground over the streetcocks of water and gas pipes for the purpose of giving access to the cooks when required.
The object of our improvement is to produce a simple, light, and durable box of this charaoter; and ourinvention consists, to that end, of the i-mprovements,which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are vertical sectional elevations of our improved stop-cock box. Figs. 3 and 4 are horizontal sections in lines 00 0c and yy, Fig. 1, respectively.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the upper and B the lower tubular part of the box. The upper part, A, is fitted loosely over the lower part, B, so that the former can be freely raised and lowered or turned on the latterin adjusting the length of the box.
or represents horizontal depressions, and 1) represents vertical depressions or grooves formed in the upper tubular part, A, on the inner side thereof.
0 represents studs or projections formed on diametrically-opposite sides of thelower part, B, near its upper end. The vertical grooves b are arranged on diametrically-opposite sides of the upper part, A, so as to receive the studs 0 of the lower part, B. The ends of the horizontal grooves a open into the vertical grooves b, so that upon turning one tubular part with reference to the other the studs 0 can pass out of the vertical grooves E into the horizontal grooves a. The latter are made of such size as to confine the studs against vertical movement. Upon adjusting the parts A and B so that the studs 0 project into the grooves b the part A can be raised and lowered on the part are locked in position by turning the part A on the part B so that the studs 0 enter the horizontal grooves a. The grooves a and b do not increase the thickness of the metal, but form corrugations in the part A,which is made of substantially the same thickness throughout, thereby forming a light and strong box.
D represents a hollow ear or extension formed on one side of the upper part, A.
E represents the cover, which rests on the top of the upper part, A, and is provided with a lug or tongue, 6, which projects into the hol- 10w ear D when the cover is in place.
f is a vertical screw passingthrough the ear D, and held against vertical movement by heads f f, bearing, respectively, against the upper and lower sides of the ear D, the portions of the screw f which are seated in the top and bottom plate of the ear D being formed without screw-threads.
G is a follower arranged in the ear D, uu derneath the tongue 6, and provided with a screw-threaded opening in which the screw f works. The rear side of the follower G is made straight and bears against the straight rear side of the ear D, whereby the follower is prevented from turning and compelled to rise or descend upon turning the screw f. The cover E is locked in position by turning the screw f so as to press the follower against the under side of the ear 0, and is released by a reverse movement of the follower.
H represents the elongated flaring base or foot formed at the lower end of the lower part, B, and provided in its flattened sides with notches or openings h, to enable the base to straddle the servicepipe.
2' represent horizontal plates or flanges cast on the inner side of the base H at both ends thereof, and on opposite sides of the notches h, to .give the box a firm support in the ground and prevent the surrounding soil as much as possible from working into the lower part of the box, whereby the stopcock would be ob- 5 structed.
Our improved construction of the box re duces the weight, and consequently the cost, of the box materially without sacrificing strength, and permits the parts to be easily molded and 100 cast. it also protects the box to a large ex tent against moisture and. consequent rusting by reason of the upper and outer portion of I cover E, provided with atongue, e, a screw, f, r the box conducting the moisture down toward seated in the ear D, and a follower, G, applied IO the foot of the box, and preventing the moisture to said screw, substantially as set forth.
from coming in contact with the interlocking LOUIS P. REIOHERT.
5 parts on the inner side of the box. ANDREW FULLER.
We claim as our invention- \Vitnesses: The combination, with the upper tubular JNo. J. BONNER,
part, A, provided with a hollow ear, D, of the GEO. E. PITMAN.
