LAMP EXTINGUISHER.
No. 358,658. Patented Mar. 1. 1887.
J'nrazz% 7 254a vi fa aways CLIFFORD P. HALL, OF RACINE, WISCONSIN.
LAM P EXTlNGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,658, dated March 1, 1887.
Application filed September 9, 1886. Serial No. 213.002. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD P. HALL, of Racine,in the county of Racine, and in theState of IVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereofi.
My invention relates to devices for blowing out lamps, candles, &c., and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my device, and Fig. 2 is acentral longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail, and Fig. 4 a modification.
A is the handle of my device, which is made hollow, and passes into or is formed with an air-tight cylinder or chamber, B, that terminates in a nozzle, (J.
D is a piston having a thumb piece, cl, which projects through the side of the handle, aud by which the piston is retracted against the tension of a spring, E, one end of which is secured to the upper end of the handle and the other to the tburnb-piece or the lower end of the piston, which latter has a head, D, that fits snugly in the cylinder B.
The extreme lower end of the piston D carries a loop, D for engagement with the head G of a springhook, G, when the piston is retracted, and this hook has also a thumb-piece, 9, that projects through an opening in the handle in position to be readily operated by the thumb of the hand that holds the handle.
The nozzle 0 may be either straight, curved, or bent at any desired angle.
In operating my device it is only necessary to retract the piston by ineans of the thumb pieced until the hook G engages with the loop I)", and then place the nozzle in proximity to the flame or over the chimney of a lamp and press the thumbpiece y, when the piston will be suddenly released, and the air will be ejected from the nozzle with suflicieut force to extinguish the light.
My device may be made of any desired length or style.
I do not confine myself to the precise form of any ofthe parts of my device, nor to the kind of springs used, as these may be varied indefinitely without departing from the spirit of my invention. For instance, in Fig. 4 I show the lower part of the handle A grooved or slotted, instead of hollow, and in this groove I pivot at g" the catch G, while at the bottom I secure an independent spring, 9, (which may be either a flat spring, as shown, or aspiral or other spring) instead of making the body of the said catch G of itself a spring, as in the other figures, the head or hook G and thumbpiece 9 operating in precisely the same way in both forms of the device.
I am aware that a cylinder provided with a discharge-opening and a spring-actuated piston is not broadly new in extinguishers, and such I do not claim.
Having thus full y described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a lamp or candle cxtinguisher, the combination of acylinder having ajet-nozzle with a spring-actuated piston, a catch for retaining the piston in its retracted position, and means, substantially as described, for releasing the catch, as set forth.
2. In a lamp or candle extinguisher, the combination of a cylinder, springactuated piston, a spring-catch hoolnand thumb piece i'oroperating the catch-hook and thus releasing the piston, as set forth.
The combination of the cylinder, piston, and its handle, a spring for operating the piston and the catcl1-hook,and its thumb piece, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the 85 county of Milwaukee and State of W'isconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
CLIFFORD P. HALL.
