No. l138,070, PatentedAprilzznava.
UNITED STATES 'PATENT frEcE.
GEORGE BROWNLEE, OF PRINCETON, INDIANA.
IMPRovEMEN'r INl LAMPS. l
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,070, dated April 22, 1873 application tiled February 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE BRowNLEE, of Princeton, in the county of Gibson and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Safety-Burner; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of my safetyburner on the line c c, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same with dome and chimneycarrier taken ofi". Fig. 3 is a detail vertical transverse section on line Fig. 2. Fig. et is a detail side view, partly in section, showing notches and rest for sliding lever. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of the dome on line y y, Fig. 1; and Fig. 6 is a vertical section of th dome, showing shape thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to construct a burner for coal-oil lamps by the use of which explosions may be prevented, a quick extinguishment ofthe flame be obtained, and clearer and brighter light be produced. My invention consists in a weighted valve on the end of alever connected with a tubular wick-slide, Vwhich extinguishes the ilame either by the pressure of the oil-gases or at will by jerking the lamp or inclining the same.
In the drawing, A represents the body of the lamp, with a handle, B. To the body A is applied in the usual manner the burner with wick-tube and dome. An aperture, b, in the bottom of the burner' leads to a second bottom, d, with a corresponding aperture, into which is placed the extension c of an L-shaped weighted valve, Fig. 1. The leverarm of valve C rests on plate d, and is pivoted at s between the wick-tube and outer casing, so as to swing freely therein. An upward extension, g, of the arm of valve G forms with a movable lug, h, a small recess for spring D. The spring D is made of wire applied to the inside of the metallic casing, and bent so as to pass through the recess between extension g and lug h. It then passes to the outside of the perforated casing E, which has notches t', between which said spring is moved up and down. A projection, K, at the lower notch, holds spring D therein until the latter is displaced. The spring D is further attached to suitable projections l of a tube, F, itted over the wick-tube, and sliding up and down thereon. By a screw and nut, G, connected by a wire, m, to lever D, the action of the saine'is regulated at pleasure. A perforated plate, n, covers the valve and extinguisher mechanism, and allows a steady supply of air to the tlame. The spring D is pressed down into the lower notch i under the projection K, and the regulator m is so adjusted by nut G that the least pressure will disconnect spring I) from the lower notch and carry the sliding tube Fover the wick-tube.
The oil-gases developed in body A, )ressing on extension e of weighted valve G, will lift the same, and with it the pivoted end pin g, so that spring D is released and tube F madeto slide upward over the wick, extinguishing the dame. The same effect will he produced by inclining the body of the lamp or jerking the same.
By these means a great number of accidents, arising partly from impure oil or the careless handling of the lamp, may be altogether j avoided.
H is the chimney-plate with a series ofperforations, O, with outside indentations i', slot p, and rounded projections q.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A weighted valve, G, having the extension e applied to an aperture in the plate d over the body A, as and for the purpose described.
2. The lever-arm of valve C, having upward projection g and lug h, combined with the spring D and notch K of casing, as described,
to form a connection between valve G and sliding extinguisher F, as and for the purpose set forth. j
3. The screw-regulator G m applied to the spring D, as and for the purpose specified.
GEORGE BROWNLEE. Witnesses:
