UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
WILLIAM BOEKEL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAS-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,332, dated February 22, 1887.
-Applieation tiled June 13, i885. Serial No. 1C8.578. (No model.) I
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BoEKEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Penn- 5 Sylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Burners, which improvement is fully set forth in the following speciiication and accompanying drawings, in which- 1o Figure l represents a vertical section of a gas-burner embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section iu lineww, Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section in line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding lparts in the several gures.
My Vinvention relates to improvements in gas-burners; and it consists in the various detailsin construction and arrangement ofparts,
2o as hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a 'gas-pipe which is connected with .a supplyservice pipe in any suitable manner. To the bottom of said pipe is secured a chamber, B,
from which rises a circular row of burners, C, said chamber being also sustained by a rod or pipe, C', which is connected with the chamber, passes through the pipe A, and is attached' at top to a plug or coupling. D.
3o Surrounding the burners C isa chimney, E, and above the same is a iiue, F, for the escape of the products of combustion. Surrounding` the iiue F is a flue, G, for the admission of air to the burners, it being noticed that the flue F is suitably secured to the top cap, H, and the ilue G to a chamber, J, below said cap. Attached to said chamber J, and in communication therewith, are tubes K, which reach to a chamber, L, the lattersurroundng the burn- 40 ers C and sustaining the chimney E, and
adapted to convey air to said burners.
Within the space between the burners C and chambers J is a deflector, M, which is an annulus of V shape in cross-section, adapted to direct air between the burners and within the same and also outside thereof, whereby theA iiame is supplied with air both on its interior and exterior.
It will be seen that when the burner is lighted the products of combustion escape through the fine F. This also heats the pipe A, so that the gas is conveyed to the burners in a warm or heated condition. Again, the air ascending, the iiue G is heated by the hot ue F, and so directed, by means of the pipes K and chamber L, to the burner in a warmor heated condition, so that a brilliant light is produced.
A portion of the pipe A just above the burners is widened, as at A', and formed of 60 material that may become incandescent and act as a reflector, and likewise produce an enlarged chamber for heating the gas as it descends in its passage to the burners.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. vThe gas-pipe A, with burners C, in conlbination with air'- chamber L, surrounding said burners and having deiiectors M, chim- 7o ney E, supported by said chamber L and having flueF, iiue G, surrounding said iiue F and open at bottom and leading into the air-chamber J, and tubes K, connecting airchambers J and L, substantiallyas and for the 7 5 purpose set forth.
2. A circular row of burners and a surrounding air-chamber, in combination with a double-acting deflector, substantially as described.
WM. BOEKEL. Witnesses:
JOHN A. WIEDERSHEIM.
A. P. GRANT.
