PATENT Finch.
BRUNO E. PANZIG, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
"GAS-LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,777, dated November 16, 1886.
Application filed May 8, 1886. Serial No. 201,525. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BRUNO E. PANZIG, a cltizen of Saxony, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia; State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement 1n Gas-Lamps, which improvement is fullyset forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 represent vertical sections of a gas-lamp embodying my invention. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention relates to improvements in gaslamps; and it consists in the various details in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter set forth, whereby the gas is more effectually heatedprior to its consumption and the brilliancy of the flame is increased.
Referring to the drawings,.A represents a pipe connected with the supply-pipe, and B represents branches leading therefrom, and having at their outer ends the'depending pipes O, the lower ends whereof have burners D, which are in contact or located close to each other. The lower ends of said pipes may be in clined toward each other, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to blend the flames of the two burners, producing thereby a single flame, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2. Surrounding the pipeA is a sleeve or jacket, E, which is open at top and bottom, and has connected with its lower end a deflector, F, through whose upper part, G, the branch pipes B pass. The deflector is of the form of a chamber, G, which is open at bottom, closed at sides, and closed at top, excepting at the center, where it has an opening in communication with thejacket E. Surrounding the jacket E is a chimney, H, the same being enlarged at bottom, and inclosing the chamber G and upper portions of the pipes O. A ring, J, with arms K, is connected with the deflector F, and has secured to it by bayonet or other joints, as at a, the rim L, from which the shade M is suspended.
N represents a casing or cover for the upper part of the lamp, serving as an ornament therefor. I
The portion of the pipe A within the jacket E is enlarged, forming a gas-chamber, A. It
A will be seen that the flame of the burner rises to the deflector F, and the products of combustion enter the same, and are directed into the jacket E, thus heating the gas in the chamber A, the heat also impinging against the portion of the branch pipes B within the upper part, G, of the deflector, it being seen that the said -part G is tapering, the narrow end being above, forming somewhat of ahood above the flame, whereby the products of combustion are directed into the jacket E.
The pipe A has connected with it, above the 'top of the jacket E, a deflector, P,which serves to spread the products of combustion which escape at the top of the jacket, and prevent smoking of the ceiling of the apartment in which the lamp is employed.
I am aware that it is not new to construct a gas-lamp with parts so-arranged that the gas in the inlet-pipe is heated by the flame prior to its consumption, and such I do not claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A gas-lamp having an inlet-pipe with an enlarged portion, the branches B, having gastubes 0, their lower ends being provided with burners, the deflector F, having the branches B passing through the upper part thereof, and the jacket E, open at top and bottom, and surrounding the inlet-pipe, the ring J,with arms K, and. the chimney H, having an enlarged lower portion resting on ring J, and surrounding the jacket E, all of said parts combined substantially as and for the purpose
