[54] COLLAR SUPPORT 2 Chums 5 Drawmg Figs ABSTRACT: The invention relates to an angulated support 521 US. Cl. 223/83, for the collar of a folded shirt to inhibit the buckling, creasing or wrinkling of the collar during transit of the shirt.
COLLAR SUPPORT This invention relates to supports for supporting the wings of a collar of a folded shirt.
One of the problems encountered with the shipment of folded shirts that are either new or which are returned by a laundry is that, during such shipment, other loads are placed upon the shirt and which loads cause the wings of the collar to buckle, crease or wrinkle t the detriment of the appearance of the shirt. Various proposals have, heretofore, been made to overcome this disadvantage but the design and construction of such supports have been so complicated as to increase the cost factor. Moreover, many of the previously known supports have not, in fact, supported thewings of the collars at all but have merely supported the sides and back portions of a collar and have not, in consequence; prevented deformation of the wings of the collar. Hence, it is the object of the invention to provide a device for supporting the wing of a collar of a folded shirt which will overcome the above disadvantages and yet which is of relatively simple construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
According to one broad aspect, therefore, the present invention relates to a support positionable under a wing of the collar of a folded shirt for supporting said wing, said support being a resiliently flexible member and having an elongated main portion and a side portion integrally connected to the main portion and angulated with respect thereto.
The invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of one form of support and FIG. 2 is an underside view thereof;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of another form of support and FIG. 4 is an underside view thereof; and
FIG. 5 is a pictorial view of a pair of supports, of the type shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, in situ with a folded shirt.
Referring to the drawings, and in particular to FIGS. 1 to 4, each support positionable under a wing of the collar of a folded shirt for supporting said wing comprises a resiliently flexible tapering elongated unitary member having a pair of ends indicated generally at 1,1a. One end 1 is substantially flat. Each member has a leading edge 2 and a trailing edge 3 extending from the flat end fl to a substantially triangularly shaped end pedestal wall portion indicated generally at 4 and which tapers towards the trailing edge 3. The end pedestal wall portion 4 has a straight base edge 5 connecting the leading edge 2 and trailing edge 3. Each member also includes a substantially triangularly shaped forward pedestal wall portion indicated generally at 6 which tapers from theend pedestal wall portion 4 towards the flat end 1. Each forward pedestal wall portion 6 has a straight base edge formed by a portion of the leading edge 2.
As will also be seen from the two embodiments shown in FIGS. 1-4, the pedestal wall portions 4 and 6 extend substantially nonnal to the plane of the flat'end 1 so that, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 4, a hollow open-bottomed pedestal is formed, the portion 7 of each member extending between the pedestal wall portions 4, 6 and the trailing edge defining the top of the pedestal. I H e Turning now specifically to FIGS. 3 and 4 which illustrate a second embodiment of the invention, like reference numerals have been employed and it will be seen that the top 7 of the pedestal, as it approaches the forward pedestal wall portion 6. is convex and is concave as it approaches the trailing edge 3. Preferably the support member is moulded from a synthetic plastic material such as P.V.C.
Referring now to FIG. 5, it will be seen that a folded shirt S provided with a collar C having wings W, has a pair of the type of supports shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 positioned under the wings and extending a predetermined distance around the collar. The right-hand wing W illustrated in FIG. 5 is shown as being folded upwardly so as to display its associated support in situ, whereas the left-hand wing W in FIG. 5 is clearly shown as being supported by the support member. In situ, the flat end I of each support will be in face-to-face contact with the shirt 8 adjacent the neckband thereof and remote from the terminal end of the wing W whereas the pedestal will support the wing W inspaced angulated relationship to the shirt S. In this position, the end pedestal wall portion 4 is located adjacent the terminal end of the wing W and the forward pedestal wall portion 6 is located adjacent the junction of the collar C with the neckband.
From the abovedescription it will be appreciated that if a pair of folded or possibly packaged shirts are placed on one another, the wing supports of the lower shirt will support their associated wings notwithstanding the load imposed by the uppermost shirt and hence, the shape of the wings of the lowermost shirt will be maintained without becoming creased or wrinkled.
We claim:
1. A support positionable under a wing of a collar of a folded shirt for supporting said wing comprising a resiliently flexible tapering elongated unitary member having a pair of ends, one of which is substantially flat for face-to-face contact with the shirt adjacent the neckband thereof and remote from the terminal end of said wing; said support having a leading edge and a trailing edge extending from said flat end to a substantially triangularly shaped end pedestal wall portion tapering towards said trailing edge and having a straight base edge connecting said leading and trailing edges; a substantially triangularly shaped forward pedestal wall portion tapering from said end pedestal wall portion towards said flat end and having a straight edge formed by a portion of said leading edge; said pedestal wall portions extending substantially normal to the plane of said flat end to 'forma hollow open-bottomed pedestal for supporting said wing in spaced angulated relationship to said shirt; the end pedestal wall portion being locatable adjacent the terminal end of the wing and the forward pedestal wall portion being locatable adjacent the junction of the collar with the neckband, that portion of said member extending between said pedestal wall portions and the trailing edge defining the top of said pedestal.
2. A support according to claim 1 wherein the top of the pedestal, as it approaches the forward pedestal wall portion, is convex and is concave as it approaches said trailing edge.
