k IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR RAISING SUNKEN WHALES T0 THE SURFACE 0F THE WATER.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,476, dated June 3, 1862.

To all whom it may concerm Be itknown thatI, THOMAS BOYS, of Southampton, in the county of Suffolk, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Method of Raising Dead Whales from the Bottom of the Sea; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon.

Theobject of myinvention is to raise to the surface of the waterwhales that have been killed and sunk to the bottom of the sea be- `fore means have `been taken to Secure them with any stronger attachment than the line of the harpoon with which they have been struck; audit consists of a method of operating with a heavy barbed instrument ot' peculiar construction,which I term a whaleraiser,77 in such a manner that it willbe guided to the carcass into which it is thrust and firmly secured, and admit the attachment ot' a hawser, to which may be applied the power necessary to lift the whale.

To enable others skilled in the art to make l and use my invention,` I will proceed to describe its construction and operation with referenceto the annexed drawing, which represents a sunken whale with a whale-boat attached. l

a a is the line attached to the harpoon or other instrument with which the whale has eye, through which is rove a small line, with both its ends on reels e e, that may be carried by a whale-boat. i

When it is desired to raise a sunken whale according to my invention, the harpoon-line a a is drawn taut and as nearly straight as possible. The clasps b and c of the whalerai'ser are placed around the harpoon-line, and theend of a cod-line from one of the reels e e is passed through the eye and spliced tov the end of the line on the other reel. The whaleraiser is then released, and falls by its own gravity, guided by the harpoon-line passing through the clasps b and o, until it strikes the Whale, into which it is thrust by the momentum acquired in its fall. The cod-lines have thus been unreeled and the bi ght carried down to the whale. A larger line is then fastened to one of the cod-lines and hauled through the eye of the whale-raiser, and a hawser is bent upon that line and also hauled through the eye, thus forming a strong attachment, to which the necessary power may be applied through the ships windlass or other means to raise the body of the whale to the surface of the Water.

I claim as'my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The construction ot' an instrument for raising whales, with side eyes or`clasps, by which it may be guided by the harpoon-line to the body of a whale, as described.

2. The formation of an eye 011 the whaleraiser, through which a hawser may be hauled by means of a cod-line,in the manner specitied.

3. The use of a barbed instrument combined with a small line on reels, substantially as described, for the purpose of attaching a hawser to a whale.
