Description
PATENTED `JULY 2, 186,1.
T. J. SOUTHARD.
Irl/216726072' v .Wzn einem UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. SOUTHARD, OF RICHMOND, MAINE.
PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,724, dated July 2, 1861.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. SoUTr-IARD, of Richmond, in the county of Sagadahoc, State of Maine, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the same are described and represented in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
The nature of my invention and improvements in pumps consists in the application and use of a weighted fly wheel and a weighted lever or pendulum, operated by a crank in such a way and manner, that the weight of the pendulum acts to preserve the momentum from the applied power, when the pump is operated. y
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use the improvements in pumps which I have invented I will proceed to describe their construction and operation referring to the accompanying` drawings in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
Figure 1, is a plan or top view of two ship pumps with my improvements. Fig. 2, is an end elevation of the same.
A, represents a portion of the deck of a vessel with two pumps B, B, inserted through, and projecting above it.
O, is a rectangular frame arranged above the pumps and supported by four or more posts D, D, shown in the drawing Fig. 2. The frame C, has two bars EF across it to which the stands F, F, are fastened to support the rock shaft G, which is filled to turn freely in them for the purpose of operating the working beam IFI, which is fastened on it to traverse the piston rods I, I, of the pumps B, B, which rods are connected to the beam I-I, by the pins J, J, shown in Fig. 2.
To work the rock shaft G, and operate the beam and pumps the pendulum lever K, is fastened to it, which lever has a long slot L, in it for the crank pin M, to traverse in which operates the pendulum level' K. The crank pin M, is fastened in the disk N, on the shaft I), which shaft turns in the stand F, and in the box Qt, on the frame O, shown in Fig. 1. The fly wheel R, is fastened to the shaft I), and has a weight S, fastened in such a position in relation to the crank pin M, that the weight will be descending, while the crank pin is moving' the pendulum lever and weight T, out toward U, and thus aid the operator in working the pumps. The crank V, is fastened to the shaft I), in such a position, that when the operator is exerting his strength at the greatest disadvantage the weight S, on the pendulum will be descending; and when he is exerting his strength to the greatest advantage the weight S, will be ascending. The weight S, is fastened to the end of the pendulum lever K, and has an eye or staple in its lower side in which the rope IV, is fastened, so that the pumps may be worked by pulling the rope.
I have described and represented the crank shaft right under the rock shaft, and the crank pin working in a slot in the pendulum. But I contemplate that the crank shaft may be put in some other position and the crank pin arranged to work in a slotted arm from the rock shaft, instead of the pen dulum, or that the crank pin may be connected to the pendulum by a link instead of working in a slot in it.
I have described my improvements as being applied to two pumps in a ship but they may be applied to one or more pumps for pumping ships or to raise water for other purposes.
I believe I have described and represented my improvements in pumps, so as to enable any person skilled in the art to make and use them.
I will now state what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, to wit:
The combination of the weighted fly wheel; the slotted pendulum; crank pin M, and lever H, operating two or more pumps, when arranged substantially as set forth.
In testimony that the foregoing is a proper description of my improvements in pumps I have hereunto signed my name.
T. J. SOUTHARD.
Witnesses J. DENNrs, Jr., J. E. VING.
