`NITIno STATES ATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN ADELBERT THOMPSON, OF FON DALIOWA.
HAIVIE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,432` dated N0VGmb81-9.' 1886- Application tiled March 25, 1886.
To all whom t may concern:
Be'it known that I, FRANKLIN ADELBERT THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing` at Fonda, in the county of Pocahontas and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Haine-Couplings, of which the following is a speciticationbreference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in hame-couplings; and it consists of the peculiar and novel construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved coupling intermediate of the hame tug or trace and the hame, which shall ac` commodate itself to the various movements o f the parts and reduce the strain and wear on the parts thereof, whereby they will be rendered more durable and less liable to wear out.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved coupling of the class named, which shall be very simple and strong in its construction, cheap and inexpensive of manufacture, and easily an'd readily applied or adjusted for use upon the hame and trace.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved coupling applied to a hame and trace. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the shank, and Fig. 3 is asimilar view of the clampingplates. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the coupling-plates and shank connected together.
Referring to the drawings, in which like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in'all the figures, A designates the hame; B, the trace or tug, which are of the ordinary or any preferred form; and O, my improved coupling intermediate of the hame and tug. The
coupling C is provided with a shank, D, thatl is provided at one end with an integral ball or sphere, d, that is enlarged to asuitable size, 4
and at its opposite end with integral prongs d', that are arranged parallel with and a short distance apart from each other and at a suitable angle to the shank. These prongs are inserted or driven into the hame at a suitable point thereon, so that the shank and sphere or ball project rearwardly and in the plane of Serial No. 196,541. (No model.)
the trace or tug B. The coupling C is further provided with two plates, E, which are preferably rectangular in form, and provided with apertures e, through which are passed the rivets that secure the plates to the hame tug or trace, said plates lying on opposite sides of the trace or tug, at the extreme forward end thereof. rlhe front ends of these plates are provided with integral hollow enlargements or heads F, that form a socket for the reception and retention ot' the ball or sphere of the shank D, whereby a ball-and-socket joint is provided between the hame and trace, which --permits of a free movement of the parts, and
enables the hame and trace` to adapt themselves to the motions of each other, and reduces the strain and wear to render them more durable. The front edges of the hollow semicircular portions or heads F are recessed, as
at f, and the edges thereof beveled to provide for the passage of the shank'D, and permit` the free rotationthereof; and intermediate of the hollow socket or head and the plates is provided a reduced neck, G, which is curved transversely and provided with an aperture, g, for the passage of a rivet or bolt, g', to secure the plates together. j
To apply or adjust my improved coupling, the prongs of the shank areinserted or driven into the hame, and the ball or sphere d fitted in the socket or head F of the plates E, which are then fitted on opposite sides of the hame tug or traceyand secured thereto and to each other by means of the rivets. The curved neck and head of each of the plates are provided with projecting portions h, that lie out of the plane of the inner faces of the plates, and when these plates are adjusted upon the trace or tug, these project-ing portions of the head and neck come and tit together very squarely and vfirmly, and the space of proper width is provided between the plates for the insertion or reception of the trace or tug.-
The device is very easily and readily adjusted and secured in place, and it is very durable and simple in construction and cheap and inexpensive of manufacture, the entire coupling being cast in three pieces. f
I am aware that it is not new to provide a ball-and-socket coupling intermediate of the hame and the trace, and hence I do not claim ICO this feature, broadly, but confine myself to the peculiar features of construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A hamecoupling comprising a shank having an enlarged ball or head and the an gular prongs adapted to be attached to the haine, and the coupling-plates provided with the hollow socket for the reception of the ball or head, substantially as described. y
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a heme-coupling cast in three pieces and con1- prisingashank having a head or ball, and-the prongs adapted to be attached to the hame and the plates, each having a hollow recessed head and a reduced neck` intermediate of the plate and head, substantially as described.
FRANKLIN ADELBE RT THOMPSON.
' XVitnesses:
PETER MORRISON, THEODORE LILLY.
