Description
D. KATT.
GULTIVATOR SHOVEL.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 30, 1909.
962,434, Patented June 28, 1910.
DIEDBIGH KATT, OF OAKLAWN, ILLINOIS.
CULTIVATOBJ-SHOVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 28, 19119.
Application fiIed September 30, 1909. Serial No. 520,370.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DIEDRIOH KATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oaklawn, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Cultivator-Shovel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to cultivator shovels and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts to be hereinafter shown and described.
Primarily the shovel consists of a U- shaped member having its end portions projecting approximately parallel and flat at their forward extremities, with a rearwardly disposed half round shank portion at a point intermediate the length of its bent portion. Also a second member having a half round shank tongue at one extremity and in the vicinity of the extremity a shoulder.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the shovel. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the members of the shovel. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the other member of the shovel.
As before stated the shovel is composed of two members and the member 1 is approximately U-shaped having end portions extending approximately parallel and fiattened at their extremities into the blades 2. The member 1 at its intermediate portion and at a point intermediate of the ends thereof is provided with a transversely disposed recess 3 which registers with a halfround hank portion A. The portion 1 is rearwardly disposed or disposed in the opposite direction from the end portion member 1. The member 5 is long in comparison with its breadth and at one end is formed into a blade 6. Toward its other end the member 5 is provided with a shoulder 7 adapted to abut against the intermediate portion of the member 1. At a point between the shoulder 7 and the blade 6 the member 5 is provided with a bowed section 8. That portion of the member 5 beyond the shoulder 7 is half round and forms a shank 40 adapted to fit against the shank portion 5. The said parts 1 and 40 of the members 1 and 2 when fitted together form a shank which is approximately cylindrical in cross section, and are held together by a transversely disposed bolt 9 which may also be used for the purpose of securing the shank in or to the socket of a cultivator beam. By so assembling the parts it will be observed that the blade 6 of the member 5 does not lie in the same plane as that occupied by the blade 2 of the member 1. This is due to the fact that the member 5 is provided with the bowed section 8 which places the blade 6 to one side of the plane in which the blades 2 lie. At the same time it will be seen that by removing the bolt 9 the memher 5 may be disconnected from the member 1 and thus the blades 6 and 2 may be worked readily for sharpening or other purposes. Furthermore it will be seen that when the parts are assembled as above described the member 5 is restrained against longitudinal rearward movement with relation to the member 1 for the reason that the shoulder 7 engages the ends of the intermediate portion of the member 1 and also the said member 5 is restrained against lateral movement with relation to the member 1 for the reason that the shank portion of the member 5 lies in the recess 3 formed in the middle of the intermediate portion of the member 1.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is:
,A cultivator shovel comprising a U-shaped member having blades at the extremities of its arms and a recess at the midlength of its central portion, and a half-round shank integral with said portion and extending to the rear of such recess; a second member having a blade at its front end and a halfround shank at its rear end to complement that of the first-mentioned member, there being a shoulder between the shank and body portion of this member adapted to engage the central portion of the other member; and fastening means through both shanks when the members are assembled.-
Tn testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
DIEDRIOH KATT.
