J. M. ORANMER.
REIN HOLDER.
N0. 350,121. Patented Oct. 5, 1886.
A A D' a E \C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J AMES M. CRANMER, OF ROCKFORD, MICHIGAN.
RElN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,121, dated October 5, 1886.
Application filed l cbrunry 5, I886. Serial No. 190,953. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Janus M. (Immune, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Inr provements in Rein-Holders; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this spccifica tion.
Figure 1 is is a View in perspective of my invention as attachetl to dash-board of vehicle. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view. Fig. 3 is a side View.
Similar letters refer to similar parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish a simple,'inexpensive, and effective device for holding reins, made of steel or other suitable material.
I describe the same as follows: To the clips E E upon the shoulders E l l' fasten the holder consisting of the shank I), having the bent top D, and being turned upward from the bottom, forming the spring (l, the convex stem 0 nearly meeting said shank at the top and terminating in the outward-curvcd end (l. So shaped the holder is nearly closed at the top, while the flaring ends act as guides slipping the reins into the holder to the point B, spreading slightlysaid shank and stem and held by the reacting spring of said parts. The clips E E, of malleable iron or other suitable material, may usually be clinched upon the dashboard iirmly without other fastening; but where the dashboard is made of wood, or when necessary, the clip maybe made with an eye to receive a screw. Said clips are made with the shoulders E E tiopermit of the bend ing over of the top of the shank D toward the dash-board.
In Fig. 1 A A represent the reins, and F the dash-board.
I am aware that previous to my invention a reiirholder has been constructed of a single strip or blank of spring metal, and compris ing a spring-loop for the reception and reten- 5 ting the reins to be readily and quickly in serted between the flaring or diverging upper ends of the shank, and preventing all possibility of the reins being inserted between the holder and dash-board as would otherwise be the case.
Another advantage of my holder over the construction shown in the patent of Lay, be
fore referred to, is found in the fact that in the manufacture of the holder small strips and scraps of material can be utilized, while Lays construction necessitates stamping the holder from sheets of metal, thus entailing the waste of considerable material.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A rein-holder comprising a spring-shank, D, having its inner upper end, D", turned outward] y to bear against the dashboard, and having its other end curved, as at G, the at.- tachingclips E, and the shoulders on said clips, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. CHAPMAX, Anoirn 13. Mason.
