G. S. PIDG'rEON.4
PILE FOR WHARVBS. No. 342,223. Patented May 18, 1886.
n4 PETERS. mwumagnph", www n. c;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PILE FOR WHARVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,223, dated May 18, 1886.
Application filed' September 30, 1855. Serial No. 178,755. (N0 mfleL) To all whom it may concern..-
Beit known that I, GEORGE S. Pino-EON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of San Diego, county of San Diego and State of California, have invented a new and useful improvement in piles used for the support and foundation of V wharves, piers, bridges, buildings, and other structures erected over land covered by water, whereby I secure greater stability, durability, and cheapness in cost than may be had in using any wood, metal, or other description of piles heretofore in use; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my improvement.
My improved combination pile is made or constructed by using so much of a timber or wood pile as extends from a point below low water or from, at, or near the surface of the ground downward, as a base, and uniting to such base an iron or metal column, hollow or solid, and of any desired size or form, extend ing upward to a point above water, the two sections or parts of the pile thus constructed to be held rigidly together by any suitable means, so as to form a single continuous pile or support, as shown in the accompanying drawing, in which the column A is an iron or metal column united to the wood base I), and held in place by the metal cap G and the pivotal lagscrew B.
The cap C is made of iron or any suitable material, having a central hole or opening for the passage of the screw B, a circular liange on the lower side and an annular ridge or ring ,on the upper side, said flange and ring in` creasing the strength of the cap C, protecting the ends of the two sections D and A, and preventing any separate lateral movement of either section at the point of union with the cap'C, all as shown in the vertical sectional View in the iigure.
The line E represents the water surface or level, and the line F the land or any point below lowest low water.
The base D is first placed in position and to its proper depth, and the metal' cap C and column A placed thereon and secured, as shown in the drawing.
Having now fully described my invention, I do not claim a pile of any known substance, wood, metal, or other material as such; but
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, in a pile, of the wood section D and metal section A with the cap G, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a support or pile, the combination of the wood base D, the metal column A, the cap C, and the pivotal lag-screw B, all substan-A tiall y as and for the purposes set forth.
GEORGE S. PIDGEON.
