VETERINARY MOLAR CUTTER.
No. 341,957,. V Patented May18, 1886.
mullllill" r 255 litre STATES EMERY P. SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF TlVO-THIRDS TO CHARLES E. SAYRE, OF SAME PLACE, AND THOMAS E. DRAKE, OF
LEBANON, OHIO.
VETERINARY MOLAR CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,957, dated May 18, 1886. Application tiled April 3, 1886. Serial No. 197.645. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMERY P. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molar-Gutters for Horses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of instruments designed for use in the practice of the art of dental surgery in horses. As is well known to those skilled in the art, the upper teeth in the horse project beyond the lower teeth, and owing to this, as well as to the peculiar structure and formation of the teeth, protuberances and projections are at all times liable to appear or grow upon the outer surface or border of the upper teeth and the inner surface orborder of the lower teeth, and such projections or protuberances are of frequent occurrence. From such projections 011 the upper teeth, which often assume a sharp and jagged appearance, the membrane lining the cheek may, and generally does, become out and lacerated, as does in like manner the tongue from the projections on the inner border of the lower teeth.
The object of my invention is to obtain an instrument by means of which these projections may be easily cut and separated from the teeth, and without injury to said teeth.
I have illustrated my invention by the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the under side of myimproved molar-cutter closed. Fig. 2 is the same view as is Fig. 1, but showing the molar-cutter open. Fig. 3 is an ele vation of the upper side of the same. Fig. 4 is an elevation at right angles to Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
Like letters refer to like the several views.
A B are the arms or levers, turning on point O,which form my improved molar-cutter.
parts throughout a a are two beveled faces on jaw or beveled piece I) of levers A B, forming acutting-edge.
b b are shoulders or beveled edges forming and shaping the under side of the jaw.
d is a beveled edge or shoulder forming and shaping the upper side or face of my improved molar-cutter.
e is the flat upper surface of the jaws.
The cutting-edges of my improved molarcutter do not come in contact when the same is closed, as is illustrated in Fig. 1. The purpose and object of shoulder or beveled edged is to raise the flat upper surface, 6, of thejaws into suitable position, so that the cutter may be used in the several positions it necessarily is placed in the hands of the operator.
The manner in which my improved molar cutter is used is, the fiat side orface e is placed toward and against the tooth from which a projection is to be cut or taken, with the jaws open and encircling the projection, and the cutter closed. By the closing of the cutter the projection or protuberance is cut and removed from said tooth.
I am aware that cutters having jaws and suitable for use in cutting various substances have been heretofore made, and l therefore do not claim a cutter having arms or levers forming handles by which the cutter is Operated and jaws acting on or cutting the article or thing operated upon; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a molancutter for horses, the combination of arm A, having shoulders or beveled edges 12 I) and beveled edge a thereon, and shoulder at, with flat surface c, with arm B, having like shoulders I) b, beveled edge a, and shoulder (Z,with surface 6, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
EMERY P. SMITH.
