GOVERNOR FOR STEAM-ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,652 dated April 27, 1886.

Be it known that I, GEORGE H. ADAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louis ville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governorsfor Steanr Engines; and I dodeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in To the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the'accoinpanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has relation to improvements in governors for steam-engines; and it consists in the construction, novel arrangement, and adaptation of devices, as will be herein: after more fully set forth and claimed.
Referring by letter to the accompanying 2 drawings, A designates the main or driving shaft of a steanrengine,1'otated by the piston- 'rod and crank in the usual well-known manner.
B is a disk bolted on and rotating with-the main shaft.
0 is a sleeve sliding on a feather on the main shaft at c.
c is the conical outer portion of the sleeve 0, having a function hereinafter described.
D is a sleeve surrounding that portion of the sleeve G adjacent to the. disk B, and not covering its conical outer portion, 0. The sleeve D turns loosely on the sleeve 0, and is provided with the diametrically-opposite ears d (l, uponwhich pivot at c the inner ends of the link-bars 0c, the outer ends of which pivot on the outer ends of the similar and opposite levers,ld, having their outer ends pivoted at 6 upon the disk B, at points diametrically op- 15 posite each other and the same distance from the edge of the disk.
F are blocks of metal provided with longitudinal openings, by means of which they ride on the levers E, and with set-screwsfito bind 5o them upon the said levers at any desired point. The said blocks are provided. with recesses adapted to receive and hold leaden blocks,so that the weight may be increased as desired.
G G are coiled springs having their outer ends, g, .bent at right angles to the coil and threaded, so as to engage internally-tln'eaded openings h in the blocks H, which are pivoted upon the disk B at points equally distant from the center of the disk to the pivot-points of the levers E and diametrically opposite each other, as shown. The inner ends of the spring G are formed to engage and hold in slots 1', made in the hooking-blocks I, which are arranged to ride on the levers E,and are rendered adjustable to different positions therein by means of the set-screws i.
J is the rod of the balanced cutoff valve, connected therewith in such manner as to tend to close the same when thrust toward it.
9' is an enlarged head on the spindle J, in the slot ofwhich the point ofthe sleeve 0 enters.
j is a friction-roller journaled on bearings j formed in the slot and resting on the point of the sleeve 0.
K is an S-formed slot in the sleeve D, into which projects afriction-roller, k, which turns on a pin, is, standing outward from the sleeve 0. Now it is evident that the more rapidly the disk B rotates with the main shaft the further outward the levers E will be thrown by centrifugal force, and the more the sleeve D will be turned on the sleeve G, which is splined on the main shaft. As the sleeve D is turned, the action of the slot K, roller 7C, and pin k, will make the sleeve 0 travel longitudinally out of the sleeve D, and the inclined or conical portion cof the sleeve 0 will be thrust under the roller 9' and move the valvestem I, so as to tend to close the valve, thus partially cutting off the steam from the sfeaurchest and slowing the piston.
L is a coiled spring on the valve-spindle, which spring bears against the support Z and the enlarged head of the spindle, and tends to move the spindle in the opposite direction as the governorslows down and opens the engine. As the engine slows,the main shaftwill rotate less rapidly,and will regulate the governor secured thereto in the ordinary well-understood manner.
The support Z serves as a guide to the valvespindle, and a similar guide-support is on the other side of the enlarged head, an extension of the spindle passing through the same.
By means of the threaded ends 9 of the coil springs G and the nuts 9 thereon the tension of said springs may be varied at will to increase or decrease the speed.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. Inagovernor,the combinationofthe main shaft of the engine, valve-stem, and sleeve feathered on the said main shaft provided with a pin standing out from the periphery and having a conical portion adapted to engage in a slot on the enlarged end of the cut-off valve-stem, with a sleeve turning loosely on the feathered sleeve, and provided with an inclined slot, and engaging the pin on the feathered sleeve, and mechanism, substantially as described, secured to the main shaft and adapted to partially rotate the loose sleeve on the feathered sleeve.
2. In a governor, the combination of the main shaft, the disk rotating therewith, the
loaded levers having their outer ends pivoted to the disk and the inner free end adapted to be thrown outward by centrifugal force, and i the adjustable springs arranged to draw the l 3&0552
said free ends inward, with the sleeve sliding on a feather on the main shaft, the pin stand-- ing out from the same, the stem riding on a conical part of said sleeve, and the sleeve turning loosely on the sleeve engaging the feather, and provided with the S-shaped slot engaging the pin on the former sleeve, and the pivoted link-bars connecting the loose slee e to the free ends of the lever pivoted on the disk, substantially as specified.
3. In a governor, the combination of the main shaft A of the engine, the disk B, weighted levers E, spring G, pivoted block H, hookblocks I, links as, and loose sleeve D, provided with the slot K, and connected by the ears d with the links x, the stem J, and pin 7t, having upon it the frictional roller k and coiled spring L, acting against the head of the valvestem and the support Z, substantially as speci fied.
