SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,764:, dated December 22, 1885.

To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MAX ULRICH, of Easthampton, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governors for Steam-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved form of governor for steam-engines; and it consists of a governor having oscillating weights pivoted to the web of a pulley on the main shaft, said weights having slotted levers that engage pins of a laterally-sliding governor-box pro vided with an annular groove and looselyturning collar, to which a reciprocating rod is attached, which connects with the throttlevalve of the engine, as will appear more fully hereinafter, and finally be pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of a pulley with my improved centrifugal governor. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, partly in section. Figs. 3 and 4 are details of the sliding governor-box and rotating collar, and Fig. 5 is an end View of the supporting standard of the main shaft, showing the guideopening for the rod connecting the governorbox with the throttle-valve of the engine.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the main shaft of the steam-engine. F is aflywheel applied to the same; B, a pulley that is cast integral with the fly-wheel or attached in a suitable manner thereto. The governor is arranged within the pulley B, and consists of two weights, 0 C, which are hinged to fixed lugs a a, the square shanks of which are passed through square holes in the common web of the pulley and fly-wheel, said shanks being threaded at the end and secured to said web by screw-nuts b b. The weights 0 G are made of parabolic shape and provided with levers d d, which are guided by slots e e at their innerends on guide-pins ff, that are screwed into lugs g of a laterally-sliding sleeve, 9, placed on the shaft S. The weights 0 O are connected by spiral springs i 13 to screw-eyes Z Z of the hub of the pulley B, the outer ends of the springs being passed through holes in the weights 0 C, and attached thereto by screw-nuts 7c is. The weights 0 G are pulled by their springs t z" toward the center of the pulley to such an extent that the outer end of the slots 6 e abut against the pins f f, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
As soon as the shaft S rotates at a certain speed, the weights 0 O are moved by centrifugal force in outward direction, whereby the slots e e of the levers dd move along the pins f f and cause thereby the governor-sleeve g to move outwardly toward the standard R. \Vhen the speed is diminished, the weights 0 O are drawn by the springs z 15 toward the center of the pulley, so that the governor-box is moved in inward direction toward the hub of the pulley B. The oscillating motion imparted to the weights 0 O imparts thereby a lateral]y-reciprocating motion to the governorsleeve 9. The sleeve 9 is provided with a circumferential groove, 9 in which turns a ring shaped collar, m, that is made of two sections and connected by screws, as shown in Fig. 3. At one side of the ring on is arranged a screwsocket, n, to which is attached a horizontal rod, 0, which connects the governor-box g with the throttle-valve of the engine. The rod 0 is guided in a hole, 19, 0f the standard B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, which hole guides the rod 0 and imparts to the same a rectilinear reciprocating motion,by which the throttle-valve is opened or closed, so that the same responds to the motion of the oscillating weights of the governor. The tension of the spiral springs 43 t" on the weights 0 O are regulated by the screw-nuts 70 it, which are set into depressions of the weights and provided with milled rims for being conveniently adjusted.
In this manner a centrifugal governor of simple construction and of a high degree of sensitiveness is furnished, that is specially adapted for steam-engines running at high speed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of a pulley, B, oscillating weights 0 O, pivoted to the web of said pulley and provided with slotted levers d d, spiral springs t i, connecting the weights 0 G with the hub of the pulley, a laterally-sliding governor-sleeve, 9, provided with lugs g g and pins ff, a ring shaped collar, m, guided loosely in a groove of said sleeve, and a rod, 0, connecting said collar to the throttle-valve of the engine, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a pulley, B, having fixed lugs a a, oscillating weights 0 O, pivoted to said lugs and having slotted levers d d, tension-springs z 1', attached at their inner endsto the hub of the pulley and at their outer ends to holes through the weights, adjustingnuts k 7c, and a governor-sleeve having lugs 99, and guide-pinsff, for guiding the slotted ends of the levers d d, substantially as set forth.
