NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DEMING WV. SEXTON, OF EAST HAMPTON, CONNECTICUT.
SLElGH-BELL ATTACHMENT.
ZEPBCIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,151, dated February 2 1886.
Application filed April 4, 1883. Serial No. 90,593. (Model) T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEMING W. SEX'roN, of East Hampton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaft- Bell Straps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters in the figures indicate thesame parts.
Figure 1 is a side of portion of a shaft bear- .ing my improved strap and bells. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of same with bells removed. Fig. 3 is a view in cross-section on plane denoted byline mat of Fig. 1.
My invention relates particularly to the class of straps bearing sleigh-bells which are adapted to be secured to the shafts of vehicles; and it consists in the special construction and combination of the strap, bells, and shaft, as hereinafter more particularly described, and 2: pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a denotes a portion of the shaft of a vehicle, as
a sleigh; b, a metallic strap secured to the side of the shaft, as by screws, and having the projections c, which extend laterally beneath the shaft when the strap is fastened to it. The
vertical position of the strap enables me to add to its office, as a support for the bells d, the additional feature of an ornament by polishing the surface or covering it with any suitable figure or design. The side of the strap next to the shaft is shaped to conform to the outline of the latter, and with its upper edge preferably continuous with the upper side of the shaft, and the screws or bolts used to se 0 cure the plate to the shaft pass into the latter horizontally, as screw-holes made in this direction weaken the shaft the least, there be ing but little downward pressure on the shafts when the vehicle is in use. The bells b are 5 secured to the projection c by means of rivets or screws in such posit-ion that they hang directly below the shaft when the strap is secured to it, and the whole device is comparatively cheap in construction and serves an ornamental as well as useful purpose.
I am aware that bells have been supported on straps attached to and projecting from shafts or harness in various directions, and such I do not broadly claim.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with a vehicle-shaft, a, of
a metallic strap, 1), with its side next to the shaft shaped to fit the latter and adapted to be secured to the side of the shaft, and provided with a plural number of lugs, 0, projecting laterally beneath the shaft and bearing below the shaft the bells d, all substantially as described.
DEMING TV. SEXTON. Witnesses:
CLAYTON L. SMITH, E. S. PARMELEE.
