STEPHEN D. MEHEWV, OF PEABODY, KANSAS.
NECK YOKE.
$PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.334,791, dated January 26, 1886.
Application filed September 19, 1885. Serial No. 177,587. (No model.\
- a citizen of the United States, residing at Peabody, in the county of Marion and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Neck-Yokes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in neck-yokes; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
This invention is an improvement on that for which Letters Patent of the United States, N 0. 303,655, were granted me August 19, 1884.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation, partly in section, of a device embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, taken on the line 00 a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detailedperspective view of parts detached.
A represents a neck-yoke, which may be of any preferred construction, and B represents bolts passed vertically through the yoke near the center thereof, said bolts having nuts I) on their upper ends and eyes b formed in their lower ends, as shown. In these eyes, under the center of the yoke, is journaled a rockshaft, 0, having reduced spindles c at its ends, which tit in the eyes of the bolts. From the center of this rock-shaft depends an arm, 0'', at the lower end of which is formed a ball, 0". This ball is socketed in the upper side of an eyepiece, D, which is preferably made of metal and covered with leather, and provided with an opening, D, to receive the end of the tongue of the vehicle, as described in my before-mentioned patent.
It will be understood from the foregoing description that the rock-shaft and arm form a flexible connection or link for connecting the ball to the yoke, thereby permitting the eyepiece to move not only laterally with the lateral motion of the front end of the tongue, and permit the yoke to play or incline at different angles without wrenching and destroying its connecting means with the pole, but also permitting the free and easy back-and-forth movement of the latter, which my before-mentioned invention was not adapted to permit.
I do not desire to limit myself to the construction hereinbefore described, as it is evident that many modifications rnay be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the yoke, the eyebolts secured thereto, the rock-shaft journaled in the eyes of the bolts, and having the depending arm and the ball on the end thereof, and the eye-piece socketed to the ball, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN D. MEHEVV.
