SAMUEL O. TRIBOU, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS, AS SIGNOR TO THE ROCKFORD BOOT AND SHOE MANUFACTURING COMPANY,- OF SAME PLACE.
SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,398, dated January 12, 1886.
Application filed July 29, 1885. Serial No. 172,988. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL C. TRIBOU, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Rockford, in the countyof Winnebago and State of Illinois, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a class of shoes known as high shoes, which are produced IO in many-varieties, and in which elastic gores are employed.
The object of thisinvention is to produce a close-fitting shoe of its class, capable of being readily put in place on the foot and as readily v removed therefrom; and it consists in a form of shoe in which buttons are combined with elastic gores, which will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the button side of a shoe embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the button side of the shoe with buttonflaps folded outward. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the gore side of the shoe. Fig. 4 represents the button-side front port-ion. Fig. 5 represents the gore-side front portion; Fig. 6 represents the button-side back portion. Fig. 7 represents the gore-side back portion. Fig. 8 represents the lower elastic gore, and
Fig. 9 represents the upper gore.
In the figures the foot portion of my improved shoe, consisting of vamp A and quarters B, cut in one or more pieces, in connection with the bottom, consisting of the foot portion 0 and heel D, joinedby any of the known methods, are substantially the same as shoes heretofore manufactured and to be found in the trade. 1
The top or leg portion of my improved shoe consists, essentially, of a front portion, a back portion, and elastic side gores. The front portion of the shoe-top is composed of a button side, E, and a gore side, F, in every particular in outline the same, except that the button-hole edge G of the leg portion is of greater width than the corresponding portion, H, of the gore side'F, for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. The front edges of the front sides, E and F, with the linings, are
joined by seamingin the usual manner of joining such parts, and when joined these parts form the instep portion of the shoe and front portion of the leg. The back portion of the shoe-top is composed .of a button side, I, v and a gore side, K, in every particular in outline the same, except that the button edge L of the leg portion is of greater width than the corresponding portion, M, of the gore side, for a purpose hereinafter to appear. The back edges of the rear sides, I and K, with 6 the linings, are joined by seaming in the usual manner ofjoiniug such parts, and when joined these parts form the back or heel portion of the leg of the shoe. An elastic gore, N, is placed inside of the edges H and M of theleg portion on one side, extending from the enlarged side opening to the top of the leg, and, with the linings, is fixed in place by through-stitching along the side edges, H and M. Elastic gores 0 are placed inside the curved side edges, P, of the lower enlarged side openings on both sides of top portion of the shoe, and in connection with the linings are joined in place by through-stitching in vertical lines. Buttons R are fixed at proper intervals in verti- 7 5 cal line to the enlarged edgeportion L of the button-side back I, and button-holes S are formed in the enlarged edge portion G of the button-side front E, to receive the buttons R, fixed to the button-side back I. Finger-loops T are fixed inside the leg to the front and back seams, to receive thefingers to draw the shoe onto the foot. The top portion of the shoe thus constructed is joined at its lower end to the upper edge of the vamp and quarters of 35 the foot portion by through stitching or seaming in the usual manner of joining such parts, which completes the fittings to receive the bottom.
In this instance I have represented my im- 0 provements as employed in mens shoes,.and in a shoe in which the vamp and quarters are cut in one piece; but evidently my improvements are capable of use in sho as in which the vamp and quarters are cut in separate parts, and are also designed to be employed'in the manufacture of womens and childrens shoes with the vamp and quarters cut in one or more parts. I have also employed buttons and button-holes as a detachable fastening to the side 10o overlaps of the leg; but other known forms of detachable fastenings capable of use in connection with the overlaps may be employed, and still be within the scope of myinvention.
To place the shoe on the foot, the button portions of the leg are preferably folded ontward, as shown in Fig. 2; or the button-top may be turned over outward, and then, by means of the finger-loops, the shoe can be 10 readily put in place on the foot, and when buttoned Will form a close-fitting shoe.
I claim as my invention A Congress gaiter provided with a leg-extension consisting of a front and a back portion formed by continuing the upper, said front and back portions being disconnected from the goiter at both sides, and provided at one side with an independently-yielding elas tic gore, and at the other side with overlapping ends and fastenings, substantially as de- 20 scribed.
