Definitions
- Dichloroethylene has also been proposed for use in dry cleaning.
- dichloroethylene attacks certain synthetic and artificial materials formed into textile fibers and particularly fibers formed of cellulose acetate and vinyl resins.
- dichloroethylene is not entirely non-inflammable and thus does not meet the safety requirements.
- chlorofiuorinated hydrocarbon derivatives formed of one or two carbon atoms and having as many fluorine atoms as carbon atoms have also been proposed. However, they present the deficiency in that their boiling points are too low. In order to use them for dry cleaning, it is necessary to make use of special machines adapted for use with such volatile solvents, and even with such specific devices, the losses which may take place during the cleaning cycle or in the storage and handling of the solvent are excessive.
- the dry cleaning process makes use of a new and improved dry cleaning agent consisting of a liquid composition composed essentially of hexafiuorodichlorobutene or of a liquid composition containing hexafluorodichlorobutene as an essential and major ingredient.
- hexafluorodichlorobutene means a compound having the formula C F Cl and which may comprise a mixture of one or more of its isomers and particularly
- the composition containing hexafluorodichlorobutene use can be made of one or more other compounds in combination therewith selected from the group of solvents consisting of aliphatic hydrocarbon halogenated derivatives having a boiling point close to that of hexafiuorodichlorobutene, such for example as a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon derivative having a boiling point which does not deviate from the boiling point of hexafiuorodichlorobutene by more than 25 to 30 C. and preferably by not more than 15 C.
- the proportions of the constituents of said composition are selected so as to maintain, and preferably to improve, the required properties for use in dry cleaning purposes.
- hexafluorodichlorobutene is characterized by being chemically stable, having a solvent power sutficiently high without having a tendency to attack the textile fibers or the buttons or plastic ornaments which are on the garments and it is also free from odor.
- adjuvants can be incorporated in the usual small proportions with the hexafiuorodichlorobutene composition.
- adjuvants may be illustrated by the non-ionic, cationic or anionic tensio-active agents, reinforcing cleaning agents generally employed in the dry cleaning systems and in which such adjuvants preferably are selected to be compatible in the composition.
- compositions described find use also as a solvent for cleaning or for degreasing in general and particularly for the cleaning of devices fabricated of metals and insulating materials such as employed in electric and telephone apparatus, motors, and the like.
- Textile fabrics made of cellulose triacetate and polyvinyl chloride are known to be particularly sensitive to the action of organic solvents.
- the fabrics were tested by immersion in hexafluorodichlorobutene for /2 hour at 20 C., for /2 hour at 30 C. and for 4 hours at boiling point temperature using hexafluorodichlorobutene under reflux in a Soxhlet extractor. The results are set forth in the following Table I.
- a dry cleaning process for products containing some synthetic resinous materials the step of washing the product with a liquid composition consisting essentially of at least 50 percent by weight hexafluorodichlorobutene as an essential and major ingredient with the remainder being formed essentially of an aliphatichalogenated dry cleaning hydrocarbon having a boiling point within 30 C. of the hexafluorodichlorobutene and which is compatible therewith.
