BED AND BEDSTEAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,202, dated September 29, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, ANDREW SMITH and GEORGE H. ALBERS, both of Sellwood, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Bed and Bedstead, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved bed and bedstead especially adapted for use in hospitals, &c., as by means of it the patient can easily be moved when necessary.

The invention consists in the combination, with a bedstead, of a transverse roller at the head and foot end over which rollers an endless belt for supporting the bedding is passed, of which rollers the one at the head end is vertically adjustable, and both rollers are connected by side bars. A drawer is arranged in the foot end of the bedstead. A leaf is hinged on the drawer, and sliding boards are arranged above the drawer. Leaves are hinged on the sides of the bedstead.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a side view of our improved bed and bedstead. Fig. 21s an end View of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the foot end of the same. Fig. 4 is a de tail sectional view of the bedstead. Fig. 5 is a plan View of the mattress.

In the upper end of the legs A at the foot end of the bedstead B a roller, 0, is pivoted, one of the pivots of which is squared and projects from the side of the leg, and is adapted to receive a key for turning it and the roller. Over the said roller an endless belt, D, passes, which also passes over a roller, E, at the head end of the bedstead, the roller E being pivoted in the upper end of side bars, E, which are held to turn on the roller 0.

A brake-lever, G, is pivoted on the outer side of each bar F at the head end, and to the free end of each lever G a strap, H, is secured, which passes over a pulley in the head I of the bedstead and is secured on a shaft, J, journaled on the back of the head I and provided with a ratchet-wheel, J, and a crank-handle,

A leaf, K, is pivoted to each side of the bedstead, and below the leaf a series of drawers, B, and closets B are provided for receiving different articles.

Drawers L L are arranged to slide in the foot end of the bedstead, and on the outer end of the upper drawer, L, a leaf, M, is hinged, which can be held raised by two pivoted brackets, N, on the end of the drawer.

Above the drawer L two sliding boards, 0, are arranged on the foot end of the bedstead, one at each side, the said boards being provided at the outer ends and on the top surfaces with hinged stops or foot-rests P. The bedding may be placed upon the endless belt D or upon a mattress, Q, formed of the foot-section, R, the middle section, B, and the headsection, BF.

The lower end of the middle section, B, is recessed U shape to receive the upper end of the foot-section, R. The head-section, R is hinged to the upper end of the middle section, B. The side pieces of the section B extend over the sides of the section B. All the sections have rollers on the under side.

The head end of the bedding-support can be raised or lowered by turning the shaft J in one direction or the other. The weight of the support, the bedding, and the person on it press the brake-levers G firmly against the roller E as the entire weight is suspended by means of the brake-levers G, pivoted on the side bars, F, and thus the sald brake-levers prevent the roller E from revolving, thereby also preventing the top part of the belt D from sliding toward the foot end of the bed.

If the patient wishes to relieve himself, the boards 0 are pulled out, the foot-rest P raised, the drawer L pulled out, and the leaf M raised and heldin place by the brackets N. The head end of the bedding-support is then lowered and a chamber-vessel placed on the leaf M, and then the bottom roller, 0, is turned in such a manner as to move the top part of the endless belt toward the foot end of the bed. The bedding passes from the belt D into the drawer L, and the patient s legs rest upon the boards 0, the stops P keeping the legs from sliding off. The draw L is then closed to protect the bedclothes, and thereby the chamber is brought directly under the body of the patient. To bring the patient back, the roller 0 is turned in the inverse direction, so as to move the top part of the endless belt toward the head end of the bedstead, whereby the bedclothes are drawn from the drawer L, which has been opened, upon the top of the endless belt D. In case the mattress Q is used, it is moved down beyond the foot end of the bedstead and the foot part B is pulled outward to form an opening between the part B and the foot end It.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with a bedstead, of a roller pivoted in the foot end, a roller supported by straps at the head end, and an endless belt passed over the said rollers, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination, with the bedstead B, of the roller 0, pivoted in the foot end, the bars F, held to swing on the roller 0, the roller E, pivoted .between the bars F at the head end of the bedstead, and the endless belt D, passed over the rollers C E, substantially as herein shown and described.

3. The combination, with a bedstead, of the rollers G E, the bars F, the brake-levers G, pivoted on the bars F, the straps H, secured to the levers G, and a shaft to which the straps H are secured, substantiallyas herein shown and described.

4. The combination, with a bedstead, of the rollers O E, the bars F, the brake-levers G, the straps H, the rollers H, in the head of the described.

5. The combination, with a bedstead, of the drawer L, arranged to slide out of the foot end, the leaf M, pivoted to the outer end of the said drawer, and supports for the leaf when the same is raised, substantially as herein shown and described.

6. The combination,with a bedstead, of the drawer L, arranged to slide out of the foot end of the bedstead, and the sliding boards 0, above the drawer, substantially as herein shown and described.

7. The combination,with a bedstead, of the rollers O E, the endless belt D, the drawer L, in the foot end of the bedstead, the leaf M, hinged on the outer end of the drawer, and the boards 0, above the said drawer, substantially as herein shown and described.

8. A mattress formed of a middle section, a sliding foot-section, and a hinged top or head section, substantially as herein shown and described.

9. A mattress formed of a middle section, having its lower end recessed U shaped, a sliding foot-section, and a hinged top or head section, substantially as herein shown and described.

10. A mattress provided with rollers on its bottom, substantially as herein shown and described.
