IMPROVEMENT IN INVALID- BEDSTEADS.

- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,935, dated August 8, 1876; application filed March 6, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANKLIN E. SAWYEB, of Hyde Park, in the county of Lamoille and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Invalid-Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved invalids bedstead; Fig. 2, an end view of the same with head-section raised into inclined position; and Fig. 3 a top view of sectional mattress, to be used with bed.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The object of my invention is to furnish, for invalids, hospitals, and other purposes, an improved bedstead, that may be easily and conveniently adjusted by the occupant or attendant to any position, to be used as a coinmon'bed, or as a sofa or settee, or at any inclination, allowing also the ready moving from one room to the other, the use of the same as of privy, and the storing away of soiled clothes.

The invention will first be fully described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.

The adjustable sections are provided with folding legs and hinged adjustable braces for being supported at any inclination.

In the drawing, A represents the middle section of my improved invalids bedstead, and B and O the head and foot sections of I the same, which are hinged to the middle off or replaced, as required by the diiferent uses of the bed., The head or foot section, or both, may be readily raised or lowered, either by the occupant, when the same has the use of his arms, or by his nurse or attendant, by a cordand-pulley connection, 01, with the ceiling or other fixed point of support, the cords being applied to hooks or staples of the end sections and passed through a spreading crossbar, d, as shown in Fig. 2. The end boards and legs may remain in position or be detached and folded, as desired, according to the inclination given to the sections. The head-section may be raised up into a vertical position, and the foot-section lowered, so as to obtain thereby a sofa or settee, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and allow thereby the convenient moving of the entire bed on the casters of the middle section from one room to another, the narrow lateral space occupied by the bed admitting the passage through the door-frame. The head-section B is also provided with a hinged and adjustable extension brace-frame, E, that serves to support the section in inclined position, the cordand-pulley arrangement being merely used for the purpose of adjustment.

The brace-frame E is retained in folded position at the under side of the head-section, when the bed is to be used in horizontal position as a common bed. The middle section A is made with a stationary box, or with one or more laterally-sliding drawers, A ,that may be pulled out at either side, the box being closed by hinged doors. The drawer A serves as storage for the urinal, soiled clothes, and other articles, admitting, in connection with a sectional mattress, D, of my improved construction, an instance of which is indicated in Fig. 3, and by the use of a flanged funnelshaped sleeve, 1), the convenient use of the middle section as a privy, and the removal of the urinal or other article placed in the box with great facility and without the least inconvenience to the invalid.

A removable section, B, closes the required opening in mattress and box, in perfectly airtight manner, giving no annoyance to the patient, and admitting the use of the privy in any position, according as the bedstead has been adjusted in horizontal, inclined, or vertical manner.

The bedstead may be made of any material, size, and finish, and t'orms, when the point of suspension isalso employed for arranging a screen or mosquito-net, a superior bed for sick and healthy persons; also, when the headthat secure legs in vertical or folded position, section is raised, it forms a good crib for chilsubstantially as set forth. dren, and occupies less space.
