Description
THOMAS C. BARTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MACHINE FOR DRILLING THE TIRES OF WHEELS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 323, dated July 31, 1837.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS C. BARTON, of the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Gombination of Apparatus for the Purpose of Drilling the Tires o-f Wheels After They Have Been Fixed in Place Upon the yFellies; and I do hereby declare that the .fol lowing is a full and exact description thereof.
On a suitable frame, A, A', I mount a mandrel B, running in collars C, C, the mandrel being cylindrical not only in that part which runs in the collars, but also on each side thereof, so as to allow it to traverse back and forth to the extent of the hole to be drilled.
D, is a whirl by which the mandrel is to beturned, in the same manner as that of a common lathe, and E, is the drill, fixed in the mandrel.
At the back end of the machine, there is a sto-ut lever F, working upon a joint pin at G. Against the upper part of this lever, the back end of the mandrel bears, being received against a hardened steel plate.
II, is a spring acting against a shoulder on the mandrel and forcing it back, and this forcing the lower end of the lever F, against the back end of the lathe.
I, is a treadle, carrying a cam, or short lever, by which the lower end of the lever F,
may be forcedout, and the mandrel, and its drill may, consequently, be forced forward; by removing the foot from the treadle, the mandrel will be caused to recede by the action of the spring. 1
In front of the mandrel, there is a standard K, which may be removed nearer to, or
farther from, it, like the front center head of a lathe; the pin L, is to enter the hole in the hub, or nave, of the wheel, while its rim is sustained by the rest M, in front of the drill. On the top of the rest there are notches, or pins, to keep the wheel in its place during the operation of drilling.
Having thus, fully explained the construction and operatio-n of my machine for drilling tires upon wheels, I do hereby de- Clare that I do not intend to claim any of the individual parts thereof, taken separately, or alo-ne, but
What I do claim is- The manner in which I have combined the drilling parts with the standard K and the rest M together so as to constitute a machine for drilling the ytires o-f wheels in a manner much more convenient and expeditious than has heretofore been done.
THO S. C. BARTON.
