PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINIES FOR TENONING SPOKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,052, dated February 1, 1876; application filed January 3, 1 876.
To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. PEACE, of Salem, Dent county, Missouri, have invented an Improvement in Machines for 'Tenoning Spokes, of which the following is a specification.
The accompanying drawing represents a side elevation of my improved spoke-tenoning machine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
- My invention has reference to an improved spoke-tenoning machine, that is applied with great facility to the ends of the spokes after they havebeen driven into the hub, so that the wheel may be finished without moving it from place to place.
The invention consists of a spring-auger, that is guided in a suitable supporting-piece, which is rigidly clamped to the spoke, producing the exact tenoning of the spoke end by turning the auger.
In the drawing, A represents a supporting bar or piece, that is provided at one end with stationary bearings b, in which the shank of the sliding spring-cutter B is guided. At the other end of the support A are applied adjustable clamp-screws a, which are placed upon the spokes and-readilyset to any size of spoke. The spoke ispushed back against the spring-auger, which cuts the tenon by the force of the spring and the turning of the hand-crank O at the end of the stem. The length of the tenon to be cut is regulated by a screw-nut, G, placed on an auger-shank near .the crank.
The machine is rigidly clamped on the spoke end by the adjustable screw-clamp a and a loose block, D, that is placed on the lower side of the spoke and rigidly clamped thereto. by a bail, E, pivoted eccentrically to the end of a hand-lever, F. v
The lower end of sliding block D is inclined and provided with lateral grooves for being readily adjusted to the size of the spokes. The bailG is retained in stationary position in side grooves of support A, and the block prevented from getting detached from the bail by a band spring, D, attached to the lower part of the block. The spring prevents the falling out of the block when changing the device from one spoke to another. Any size of tenoning-auger may be used in the same machine.
The machine can be made at small expense, and is applied to the spoke ends after the spokes are driven into the hub to cut the tenons and finish the wheel without removing it from its place.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1 1. A spoke-tenoning machine, composed of a supporting-piece, A, and adjusting-screws...v a and bearings b, spring-auger B, and clamping device D, D, E,-and F, applied and operated substantially as specified.
2. The combination of adjustable screwclampsa, loose spring-block D, having lateral bottom grooves and retaining-spring, with stationary bail E and eccentric lever F, for clamping the machine rigidly to the spoke end, as set forth.
