BURGLAR-ALARM.

Specification of Letters Patent N 0. 32,349, dated May 21 1861.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE BRUCE, Sr., of Sing Sing, in the county of Vestchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Burglar-Alarm; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being-had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a side view of my invention complete; Fig. 2, a view of a portion of the opposite side of thesame; Fig. 3, a section of the same, taken in the line 00, on, Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the three figures.

The object of this invention is to obtain a device which will sound an alarm when an attempt is made to open a door, and at the same time serve as a fastening to prevent the door being illegitimately opened;

The invention consists in the employment or use of adjustable arms, connected to a proper support which has a hammer and sear attached to it and arranged sub stantially as hereinafter described to effect the desired object.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.

A, represents an upright which is attached to a suitable base B, and has an inclined plate C, secured to its upper end.

D, E, represent two arms which are ,connected to the upright A. The arm D, is secured to the upright by a screw a, which passes horizontally through the upright, and through an oblong slot 1), in the arm,see Fig. 2,said slot admitting of a little longitudinal play of the arm D. To the under side of the arm D, a brace F, is attached by a'joint c, and the lower end of this brace is fitted in a vertical groove or rabbet e, in the front part of the upright and allowed to slide freely up and down therein, see Fig. 3. The outer end of the arm D, is provided with a spur f, shown in Fig. 1'. a

The arm E, is attached to the back edge of the upright A. This arm E, is also pro vided with a brace G, the inner end of which is fitted in a vertical groove or rabbet g, as also is the inner end of the arm E, to admit of a vertical adjustment of the latter.

The lower and outer end of the arm E is pointed or provided with spurs.

To one side of the plate G, there is attached a gun-lock hammer H, and I, is a spring which is connected with the hammer by a link it. A small pistol barrel J, is also attached to plate C, the cone or nipple z', of which has a proper relative position with the hammer H. K, is a scar which is also attached to plate C, and in such a relative position with the lower part of the hammer H, as to engage, when the hammer is drawn back, with the notch j, which is formed at the lower part of the hammer, as shown clearly in Fig. l, a spring is, which is attached to plate G, bearing against the back part of the sear, and having a tendency to keep the same engaged with the notch.

To the lower part of the sear K, there is attached horizontally an arm Z, which passes ner end of the arm D, is directly in front of I the arm Z, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.

The operation is as follows: The barrel J, is loaded, with ball if desired, and the hammer H, drawn back or cocked. The device is then placed on the floor near the closed door, the spur f, of arm D, penetrating the door and the point or spur at the other end of arm E, penetrating the floor and preventing the upright A, being shoved back. On attempting to open the door the arm D, will be forced a trifle back and its inner end will act against arm Z, and thereby actuate the sear K, and liberate the hammer which will be forced down under the action of the spring I, and the barrel J, fired, and the alarm consequently produced. After the barrel is discharged the device it will be seen serves as a fastening and prevents the door being forced open, the arm E, effecting this result.

The vertical adjusting movement of the arms D, E, admits of the arms in all cases,

being fitted, or snugly adjusted to the door and floor.

The barrel J, is inclined so that it will be in line with the body of a person at the outer side of the door. By loading the barrel with ball it serves as a means of defense. The barrel however may be dispensed with and a bell substituted in its place, the hammer H, striking the bell and thereby sounding an alarm. By means of the knob n, the sear K, may be actuated and the hammer allowed to fall Without disturbing the arm E. Having thus described my invention What 5 I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,

The combination, for the purpose specified, of the arms D, E, the upright A, 11ammer H, and sear K, with a fire-arm barrel J, or a bell, or other alarm-sounding deis vice, arranged to be operated by the hammer substantially as set forth.
