HOSES Filed April 27, 1961 TTOR/VEYS United States Patent O 3,216,458 HOSES (Blof Sabe, Bromma, Sweden, assignor to Ulvsunda Gummifabriks Aktiebolag, Bromma, Sweden, a corporation of Sweden Filed Apr. 27, 1961, Ser. No. 106,122 Claims priority, application Sweden, May 3, 1960, 4,369/ 60 1 Claim. (Cl. 13S-122) This invention relates to a hose consisting of a tube of material such as textile fabric which cooperates with a helically extending metal wire and is held together by heat-treated rubber. Characteristic of the invention is that the tube which is held together by heat-treated rubber consists of a helically extending band of a material such as textile fabric with overlapping edges, said band being so mounted on the outer side of the helically extending metal wire that the portions of the tube intermediate the coils of the metal Wire have the same internal diameter as the metal wire.
The invention is also concerned with a method for making the hose. The characteristic features of this method are that the tube is formed from a band which in the developed state is helically wound onto a cylindrical mandrel simultaneously with the metal wire and in such a way that the metal wire Will come to lie on the inner side of the tube formed by the band, and that during the heat treatment the band is held engaged with the mandrel intermediate the helically extending coils of the metal wire by means of a forming means such as a helically wound textile cord.
For a better understanding the invention will be more fully 'described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

FIG. 2 is a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of a part of the hose showing the vulcanizable rubber coating in detail.
As will appear from the drawing the tube which is held together by heat-treated rubber consists of a helically extending band 2 of a material such as textile fabric with overlapping edges, said band 2 being so mounted on the outer side of the helically extending metal wire 3 that the portions of the tube intermediate the coils of the metal Wire 3 have the same internal diameter as said metal wire 3.
According to the preferred embodiment illustrated, the helically extending band 2 is of uniform Width and has the same pitch as the helically extending metal Wire 3 and is of a width approximately twice as large as the spacing f any two adjacent coils of the helically extending metal wire 3.
During the manufacture of the hose the band 2 is wrapped in the developed state helically around the cylindrical mandrel 1 simultaneously with the metal wire 3, the wrapping being performed in such a way that the metal wire 3 will come to lie on the inner side of the tube formed by the band 2. The band 2 preferably is a textile band coated with vulcanizable rubber 5, shown on an enlarged scale in FIG. 2 for purposes of illustration, which provides the binding together of the superimposed portions of the band 2 when the thus assembled hose is vulcanized by a vulcanizing process known per se.

When the band 2 is of a width approximately twice as large as the spacing of two adjacent coils of the helically extending metal wire 3, the band 2 is wrapped preferably in such a way that its edges come to lie approximately midway between the coils of the metal Wire 3.
During the heat treatment the band 2 is held engaged with the mandrel 1 intermediate the helically extending coils of the metal wire 3 by means of a helically wound member such as a textile cord 4 which is wound suciently tightly to press the portions of the bands 2 between coils of wire tightly against the mandrel 1. The cord 4 ensures that the adjoining portions of the band 2 are securely bound together and that the inner side of the hose snugly conforms to the shape of the mandrel 1, so that the cylindrical inner surface of the hose will be at least substantially smooth.
The textile cord 4 is removed after the heat treatment and thus does not diminish the flexibility of the hose in any way. It is very important that the finished hose possesses good flexibility, as the hose is intended inter alia for use with Vacuum cleaners and therefore must be airtight as Well.
The band 2 used for the manufacture of the hose should be substantially unstretchable in its longitudinal direction but resilient to some extent in its transverse direction. If the band 2 is of textile material it should thus have an unstretchable warp thread and a resilient weft thread. In this way the tube wound from the band 2 will have a certain resiliency in its lonigtudinal direction, which permits the tube to be pressed down into engagement with the mandrel 1 intermediate the coils of the metal wire 3 by means of the textile cord 4.
In some cases the band 2 may be cut diagonally from a textile fabric and joined together to a continuous band.
The heat treatment, i.e. the vulcanization, is effected with the parts in the positions shown in the drawing, whereupon the hose is given its nal shape in a conventional manner. It will be understood that, because the band 2 is of textile fabric, the rubber will go into the interstices thereof when it is vulcanized and consequently the layer of rubber between the overlapping layers of the band will not remain as distinct as it appears in FIG. 2.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention, and therefore the invention is not limited to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specication, but only as indicated in the appended claim.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A hose consisting of a helically extending band of textile fabric of uniform width with the edges of the band overlapping to dene a tube, a helically extending metal wire Within said tube, the fabric lying only on the outer si-de of the helically extending metal wire, the helically extending band having the same pitch as the -helically extending wire and being of a width substantially only twice the spacing of any two adjacent coils of the helically extending metal wire with the band overlapping only substantially half the width of the preceding spire of the band, the fabric being only two plies thick along substantially the entire length of said hose, and the portions of the tube intermediate the coils of the metal wire extending inwardly between the coils of the wire and having the same internal diameter as the coil of metal wire, and a vulcanized coating of rubber on said band of textile fabric binding the overlapping portions of said band together.
