To @ZZ whom it may concern/f i Be it known that I, GEORGE SCHULZ, .of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improve ments in Knockdown Closets; and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of wardrobes, book cases, provision safes, or other similar closets of that class in which the device may be manufactured and shipped in a knockdown condition and set up with the side securely fastened in place without the necessity of the use of nails, screws, or equivalent devices; and it consists in the peculiar1 combinations and the construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Figure l is a vertical section of one of my improved closets or boxes. Fig. 2 is a plan View of one of the sides detached, Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on the horizontal line of one of the fastenings. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan of the top, and Fig. 5 a top plan of the bottom.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents the bottom of the closet, and by thc use of this term, which I shall continue throughout the specication, I desire it to mean any of the articles which I have hereinbefore referred to. This bottom is provided with channels a to receive the lower edges of the sides of the closet.

B is the top, provided with similar channels, b, designed to engage with the top of the sides.

Gis the back; D D, the two sides, and E the front. The back and sides are made in the usual paneled way.

Projecting from the two edges of the back are the T-headed bolts c, which are designed to engage with the recess d in the adjacent sides, such recess being formed in the timber of the sides and covered by the metallic plates e, through which are cut the slots f, such slots being enlarged at one end to receive the heads of the T-bolts, which enter the recess in the timber in rear of such plates. After thejunction Vis thus made the end of the side will pro- `iect above the end of thebaclr. Now, bypressing down upon the end of the side it compels the neck of the T-bolts to enga-ge with the narrow portion of the slot, and the parts are thus rigidly locked together. The front edges of the two sides are provided with similar T- head bolts, which engage with similar slots and plates in a similar way let into the rear face of the door-frame-F, to which the doorE is hinged in the usual manner. The top and bottom, now being in place, will ordinarily require no fastening, as the weight of the closet will hold it securclyin the channels of the bottonnand the top by its own weight will rest in place, its channels engaging with the top of the closet.

It will be seen that the channels in the top and bottom also receive the top and bottom of the door-frame, thus holding the latter in place and preventing the closet from collapsing when set up without shelves.

I deem it important that the door-frame be securedto the front edges of the sides, instead of to the inside of the same, as has heretofore been the custom, for by this construction a larger door can be used with a detachable door-frame than can be used with a` door-frame that is connected to the inner edges of the sides.

It will readily be seen that the top may be hinged to the back if such a thing as a pro vision-safe is required, the usual ice-receptacle and shelving being placed upon the inside, and that this method of manufacturing closets will be found of great assistance to the manufacturer as well as the purchaser, for whenever it is desired to transport the closet by rail or otherwise it can be taken to pieces in a very few moments,compactly hunched and shipped, and reset up at but a moiety of the expense attending the shipment of such closet in a completed condition.

I am aware of the Patent No. 238,452, and make no claim to the construction shown therein as forming part of my invention.
