Filed Mar. 21, 1963, Ser. No. 266,974 7 Claims. (Cl. 206-57) This invention relates to dispenser cartons, and, more particularly, to a carton for dispensing permanent wave end papers.

Professional hair-dressers make wide use of end papers for permanent waving. However, the dispensers presently used and the method of packing end papers create a number of difficulties. For one thing, a rapidly working hair-dresser must grasp individual papers with only one free hand. As the supply of end papers is used up, those positioned at the bottom of a box become difficult to reach. Furthermore, the papers may be spilled from the box if the box is accidentally overturned. In order to overcome these disadvantages various alternatives have been employed, for example, spring-loaded or gravity-fed dispensers. However, not only does this involve additional expense, but it also requires preloading.

Accordingly, it is the primary object of this invention to provide a dispenser carton especially well adapted for permanent wave end papers. Other objects are to provide such a dispenser which is simple to construct, is inexpensive, which retains the end papers in an orderly fashion, which is spill-proof, and which allows removal of the papers with one hand. Many other advantages, features, and objects of this invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art by reference to the detailed description and the accompanying drawings in which an embodiment of this invention is shown by way of an illustrative example.

FIG. 2 is a cardboard blank from which the carton of FIG. 1 is constructed;

FIG. 3 is a perspective view showing the manner in which the blank of FIG. 2 is formed to construct the carton of FIG. 1; and

FIG. 4 is a cross sectional view of the carton of FIG. 1 illustrating the manner in which end papers are located therein and removed therefrom.

Referring to FIG. 2 of the drawing, it will be seen that the blank comprises a bottom wall 10, a left end wall 12, a right end Wall 14, a top wall 16, a back wall 18, a front wall 20 and an intermediate shelf member 22. Left end wall 12 is provided with laterally projecting wings 12a, 12b, and right end wall 14 is provided with laterally projecting wings 14a, 14b. Each of back and

18 and 20 includes a laterally projecting flap 18a, 20a. The left end of the top wall 16 also terminates in a flap 16a. It is to be understood that the dashed-dotted lines shown in FIG. 2 represent folds which are made in the blank to construct the carton of FIG. 1. Accordingly, each end of the intermediate shelf 22 is provided with an attachment area 22a, 22b which is formed by suitably folding the blank and which is utilized in the formation of the intermediate shelf, as will be hereinafter explained. 24, 26. Each of these areas is of similar rectangular shape. Cutout area 24 extends between left end wall 12 and top wall 16, while cutout area 26 extends between bottom wall and right end wall 14.

To construct the carton of FIG. 1 from the blank of FIG. 2, the blank is folded upwardly along each of the dotted fold lines with the exception of fold line 28, which is creased downwardly. FIG. 3 illustrates the assembly of the blank of FIG. 2 into the carton of FIG. 1. Folds are made along the lines indicated in FIG. 2 and the carton may be secured in its final form by gluing or other suitable means. As will be noted from FIG. 3, the attachment area 22a is doubled against and glued to the right end wall 14 and the attachment area-22b is glued to the left end wall 12 adjacent the fold line between wall 12 and wall 10 after each of the end walls has been folded into a raised position. This forms the angled intermediate shelf 22 which is an important feature of this invention. Next the flap 16a is secured to the right end walls 14 as shown, or alternatively to the attachment area 22a. The wings 12a, 12b and 14a, 14b may then be closed inwardly, and the back and

18, 20 may be raised into position and their flaps 18a, 20a either glued to the top wall 16 as shown in FIG. 1 or inserted under the edge of the top wall 16 to provide the final closure.

It will be seen from FIG. 1 that the carton of this invention is symmetrically disposed so that it presents the same aspect whether positioned as shown or in the upside down position. The width of the carton is such that end papers which are loaded therein on the intermediate shelf 22 extend beyond the sides of the

24, 26. Accordingly, papers will not spill through the openings but their flexibility allows them to be readily removed, as illustrated in FIG. 4. The end papers 30 which are loaded into the carton are preferably provided with a center fold 32 for use after removal and a quarter fold 34 which is positioned near the opening to allow for easier grasping by the fingers. The combination of the quarter fold upward with the downwardly inclining intermediate shelf 22 results in an increased angle between the end of the paper and the shelf and allows even the last paper to be easily grasped. As soon as one side of the dispenser has been emptied, it may be merely turned over and the papers withdrawn from the opposite side.

The many advantages of this invention will be immediately apparent to those skilled in the art. It will also be understood that various modifications may be made in the form and arrangement of the elements comprising the carton of the invention without departing from its spirit. For example, rather than actually removing the blank material to form the

24, 26, the end papers may be sold in a closed container having suitable perforation for later removal by the customer to form the cutout areas. It will also be apparent that the material of which the carton is made is of little significance. Accordingly, it will be understood that the foregoing description is illustrative, rather than limiting. This invention is limited only by the scope of the following claims.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. In a carton for containing and dispensing flexible sheets of material, said carton including a first end Wall, a second end wall, and a plurality of side walls joining and spacing the first and second end walls, the improvement which comprises: a first of said side walls defining a first opening therein adjacent the intersection of said first side wall with said first end wall; said fiirst end wall defining a second opening adjoining said first opening; a second of said side walls parallel to said first side wall defining a third opening therein adjacent the intersection of said second side wall with said second end wall; said second end wall defining a fourth opening adjoining said third opening; and an angled shelf member contained within said carton and having a first end intersecting said first end wall along one edge of said second opening and a second end intersecting said second end wall along one edge of said fourth opening, said first and second ends intersecting said first and second end walls along lines parallel to one another and to both of said first and second side Walls. 7

2. The carton of claim 1 wherein said shelf member comprises a substantially planar shelf.

3. The carton of claim 2 wherein said plurality of side walls are four.

4. The carton of claim 3 wherein each of said first, second, third, and fourth openings is rectangular.

5.. The carton of claim 4 wherein said shelf intersects said first end Wall along .a line adjacent that edge of said second opening nearest said second side wall and intersects said second end wall along a line adjacent that edge of said fourth opening nearest said first side wall.

6. A carton having substantially the shape of a parallelepiped, at least two diametrically opposed edges of said carton being ,cut away to form centrally positioned dispensing openings narrower than the Width of the carton, and an angled shelf member substantially separating said carton into two compartments, each of said compartments including one of said dispensing openings.

7. Aflexible sheet dispenser comprising: a carton having substantially the shape of a parallelepiped, at least two diametrically opposed edges of said carton being cut away to form centrally positioned dispensing openings narrower than the width of the carton, and including an angled shelf member substantially separating said carton into two compartments, each of said compartments including one of said dispensing openings; and a plurality of flexible sheets in each of said compartments, each of said sheets having a center first crease and a second crease between said first crease and the edge of said sheet adjacent its dispensing opening.

Claims

1. IN A CARTON FOR CONTAINING AND DISPENSING FLEXIBLE SHEETS OF MATERIAL, SAID CARTON INCLUDING A FIRST END WALL, A SECOND END WALL, AND A PLURALITY OF SIDE WALLS JOINING AND SPACING THE FIRST AND SECOND END WALLS, THE IMPROVEMENT WHICH COMPRISES: A FIRST OF SAID SIDE WALLS DEFINING A FIRST OPENING THEREIN ADJACENT THE INTERSECTION OF SAID FIRST SIDE WALL WITH SAID FIRST END WALL; SAID FIRST END WALL DEFINING A SECOND OPENING ADJOINING SAID FIRST OPENING; A SECOND OF SAID SIDE WALLS PARALLEL TO SAID FIRST SIDE WALL DEFINING A THIRD OPENING THEREIN ADJACENT THE INTERSECTION OF SAID SECOND SIDE WALL WITH SAID SECOND END WALL; AND SECOND END WALL DEFINING A FOURTH OPENING ADJOINING SAID THIRD OPENING; AND AN ANGLED SHELF MEMBER CONTAINED WITHIN SAID CARTON AND HAVING A FIRST END INTERSECTING SAID FIRST END WALL ALONG ONE EDGE OF SAID SECOND OPENING AND A SECOND END INTERSECTING SAID SECOND END WALL ALONG ONE EDGE OF SAID FOURTH OPENING, SAID FIRST AND SECOND ENDS INTERSECTING SAID FIRST AND SECOND END WALLS ALONG LINES PARALLEL TO ONE ANOTHER AND TO BOTH OF SAID FIRST AND SECOND SIDE WALLS.
