Plastic bottles are conventionally formed by blow molding plastic material, usually polyethylene, to the desired shape for the bottle, and are conventionally printed or provided with a label adhered to the surface thereof for identifying the product contained in the bottle. For good bonding of the printing ink or the adhered labels, such bottles (and particularly polyethylene bottles) need to be treated. Among the several objects of this invention may be noted the provision of a bottle, and particularly a blow molded plastic bottle, having a label element or card which is associated with the bottle in a novel manner, eliminating any necessity for treating the bottle in such manner as heretofore used for improving the bonding of ink or adhesive to such bottles; and the provision of a bottle such as described in which the label element or card is associated with the bottle in an interesting and attractive manner. Other objects and features will be in part apparent and in part pointed out hereinafter.

The invention accordingly comprises the constructions hereinafter described, the scope of the invention being indicated in the following claims.

Referring to the drawings, bottle B made in accordance with this invention and provided with a label element or card C. Bottle B has a body 1 in the form of a hollow annulus with a generally flat bottom 3 for standing the bottle erect, and has a tapered neck 5 extending upward from the body or hollow annulus 1. The annulus bounds an opening 7 which extends through the bottle from one face thereof to the other. The card C is mounted in this opening.

As shown, the portions 9 of the hollow annulus 1 on opposite sides of the opening 7 are of circular cross section (see FIG. 4). The portion 11 of the hollow annulus below the opening 7 has a curved upper portion, and generally flat front and back wall portions which are inclined slightly outward down toward the bottom 3. Opening 7 is shown elliptical. All these shapes may be varied. For example, port-ions 9 could be elliptical and opening 7 could be circular.

As. shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 4; the wall portion 7a of the bottle which bounds the opening7 is formed with a recess or dimple; 13 at the top and a similar recess or dimple 13 at the bottom, These are small recesses, generally of saucer shape. The card C is slightly smaller than opening 7. The latter be ing elliptical as shown in FIG. 1, the card C is also elliptical and has a tapered projection 15 at the top and a similar tapered projection 15 at the bottom. These projections are located at the ends of the minor axis of the elliptical outline of the card, and have a snap fit in the recesses. In addition to holding the card in the opening, they act as pintles journalling the card for rotation on a vertical axis in the central plane of the bottle.

Card C may be made of any suitable thin relatively stilt material, and may be printed on one or both sides with brand names, etc. When printed on both sides, the printing is displayed at both front and back of the bottle. If the card is printed on only one side, it may be turned to present the printing one way or the other. It may also :spin on its axis in opening 7, thereby providing an interesting display.

FIGS. 5 and 6 show possible modifications of the card. In FIG. 5 the card is shown with both its sides bent away from the plane of the card in the same direction, as in dicated at 17 and in FIG. 6 the card is shown with both its sides bent away from the plane of the card in opposite directions, as indicated at 19.

FIGS. 7 and 8 illustrate a further modification in which the card C is fixed against rotation in opening C. For this purpose, two additional recesses 13 and projections 15 are provided at opposite sides of the opening 7 and the card C.

The upper end of the neck 5 of bottle B is shown as threaded at 21 for reception of a threaded cap 23.

In view of the above, it will be seen that the several objects of the invention are achieved and other advantageous results attained.

As various changes could be made in the above constructions without departing from the scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

What is claimed is:

l. A bottle having a body in the form of a hollow annulus with a generally flat bottom and a neck extending upward from the body, said annulus bounding an opening through the bottle from one face thereof to the other, and a card mounted in said opening, the wall portion of said bottle bounding the opening interiorly of said annulus, and said card, at its periphe having interfitting formations for retaining said card in said opening.

2. A bottle as set forth in claim 1 wherein said card is mounted to rotate around an axis in said opening.

3. A bottle as set forth in claim 2 wherein said card is mounted to rotate around a vertical axis.

4. A bottle as set forth in claim 1 wherein said bottle and said card have said interfitting formations at two points only, and said formations are such as to mount the card to rotate around an axis extending through said points.

5. A bottle as set forth in claim 4 wherein said points are at the top and bottom of said opening.

6. A bottle as set forth in claim 1 wherein said card is fixed against rotation in said opening.

7. A bottle as set forth in claim 1 wherein said bottle and said card have said interfitting formations at more than two points so that said card is fixed against rotation in said opening.

8. A bottle as set forth in claim 1 wherein said interfitting formations comprise a plurality of recesses in the wall portion of the bottle bounding the opening and. a corresponding plurality of projections on the card at its periphery, said projections having a snap fit in said recesses.

9. A bottle as set forth in claim 8 wherein there are only two of said recesses and two of said projections in the line of a central axis of said opening and card, and wherein said recesses and said projections are of such form as to allow the card to rotate on said axis.

10. A bottle as set forth in claim 9 wherein said two recesses and projections are at top and bottom of said opening and card and said axis is a vertical axis.

Claims

1. A BOTTLE HAVING A BODY IN THE FORM OF A HOLLOW ANNULUS WITH A GENERALY FLAT BOTTOM AND A NECK EXTENDING UPWARD FROM THE BODY, SAID ANNULUS BOUNDING AN OPENING THROUGH THE BOTTLE FROM ONE FACE THEREOF TO THE OTHER, AND A CARD MOUNTED IN SAID OPENING, THE WALL PORTION OF SAID BOTTLE BOUNDING THE OPENING INTERIORLY OF SAID ANNULUS, AND SAID CARD, AT ITS PERIPHERY, HAVING INTERFITTING FORMATIONS FOR RETAINING SAID CARD IN SAID OPENING.
