NITED FRANK WV. GOODWVIN, OF SAXONVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
LABEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 316,773, dated April 28, 1885.
Application filed June 28, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK W. GoonwrN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saxonville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Labels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap: pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked'thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective View of a demijohn showing my device attached. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a jar showing the device attached. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the plate; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device enlarged, detached from the jar.
This invention has relation to labels which can readily be attached and detached from the jug, demijohn, keg, or other vessel; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The object of the invention is to provide a label which can be at once adjusted to a jug or other vessel, to the size of which it will automatically adapt itself, and which will hold its position upon the surface of the vessel with some tenacity.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the label, which may be made of sheet metal, leather, or other flexible material. To each end of the label is attached a chain, B, terminating in a ring or loop, 0, which is cleft and engages the inner end of an elastic band, D, the outer end of which engages the cleft ring or'loop E of the end chain, F. Each end chain terminates in a hook, or one in a hook and the other in an eye; or they may have other common fastenings adapted to connect them together, as indicated at G. The label A is made with point projections H on its upper and lower margins, which, when said label is made of metal, which is prein position, so that it will not readily slip down or away upon the vessel; and the flat elastic bands are adapted to engage with some tenacity the smoother surface of a glass jar or of a keg. The composite nature of the end attachments of the label therefore adapt them for use upon vessels differing in the character of their surfaces. The label can be attached with equal facility to vessels of any shape in horizontal section, whet-her square, round, or elliptical.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 18-
1. The label herein described, having the end connections consisting each of a chain attached to the end of the label, an elastic band attached to the end of said chain, and an outer chain attached to the outer end of said FRANK W. GOODWVIN.
