Description

Jan. 19, 1965 e. MARKUS BILLFOLD wI'rH GUSSET POCKET Filed Feb. 12. 1963 lN-VENTOR. GEORGE MARKUS BY my.
ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,166,111 BILLFULD WITH GUSSET POCKET" George Markus, West Orange, NJ assignor-to Aristocrat Leather Products, Inc., New York, N.Y., a corporation of New Jersey Filed Feb. 12, 11963, Ser. No. 258,900 3 Claims. (Cl. 15038) The invention relates to gusset pocket constructions and more particularly to auxiliary gusset pockets for wallets, billfolds or the like.
In accordance with the primary object of the present invention a gusset pocket is durably and securely attached to the wallet or other article with minimum manipulation and at low cost.
Another object of the present invention is to facilitate the means by which a gusset pocket can be positionally affixed to the wall of the wallet or billfold, preliminary to the permanent or completed securement.
The above and other objects, features and advantages of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings which are illustrative of the invention but not in limitation thereof.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of the inner side of a foldable wallet or billfold;
FIG. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1, wherein the gusset pocket is in an open expanded con dition;
FIG. 3 is an inner view of the pocket as observed from the line 33 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a plan view of a die cut blank of the pocket, in flat condition before it is afiixed to the billfold; and
FIG. 5 is a perspective view of the gusset pocket in an open and expanded condition.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the billfold may be of any usual or conventional construction defined by an outer wall 12 and an inner wall 14. The auxiliary gusset pocket is indicated at 16. The pocket is formed from the blank 16A illustrated in FIG. 4 and is secured to the portion 18 of the inner wall 14 which is provided with the inner downward extension 18A for forming an auxiliary pocket with the end opening 20 in a well known way, not forming part of the present'invention. The wall 14, including portion 18, is made of vinyl sheet plastic material or of cloth or paper or other sheet material having on one surface thereof a coating of a thermoplastic material, e.g., vinyl plastic, or.othertheat scalable material. The vinyl surface of part 18 of the inner wall 14 is the exterior surface of the vinyl surface of the gusset pocket is also the exterior surface thereof, so that the two surfaces may be heat sealed to each other.
As illustrated in FIG. 4, the blank 16A for forming the gusset pocket 16 comprises the main pocket forming part 22 having the edge 24 which forms the top edge of the front wall of the pocket, and an integral part 26 which forms the rear wall of the pocket and which has an integral extension 28 whichforms a' foldable closure member for the pocket, said closure member 28 and the front wall 22 of the pocket being preferably provided with companion snap or other releasable fasteners 30 and 32 for releasably securing said closure member 28 in closed position. The blank 16A is provided with the foldable parts 34, 36 at each side edge of the blank to provide the gussets indicated at 38, as best shown in FIGS. 2 and 5. The blank 16A is also provided with the integral end parts or extensions 40 which have perforations 42 therein. It will be understood that the blank 16A is formed in one piece, being preferably die cut in the outline illustrated by FIG. 4, or in any other Patented .ian. 19,1965
suitable outline according to variations which may be made in the details in the form and construction pursuant to the present invention.
The wall portion 18 is provided with'a perforation 43 similar to the perforations 42. The integral end parts 40 extend at the back of the rear wall 26 in overlapping relation to the wall portion 18 and in overlapping relation to each other, wherein the perforations 42'of the integral endparts 40 and the perforation in the wall 18 are registered with respect to each other. A rivet 44, or other fastening means, is inserted through said registered perforations and perforation 43 in wall member 18 for positionally afixingsaid integral end portions 46 and thereby the pocket 16 to the wall member 18. It will be noted that the vinyl coated surface of the rear wall' 26 of the pocket is in face to face relation to the vinyl coated surface of the Wall portion 18 so that said overlappingend portions 40' may be heat sealed to the adjacent parts of wall portions 18. Similarly the vinyl coated surface of the rear wall 26 of the pocket is in face to face relation to the vinyl coated surface of the wall portion 18 so that said overlapping end portions 40 may be heat sealed to the adjacent parts of wall portions '18. Similarly the vinyl coated'surface of the rear wall 26 of the pocket is in face to face relation to the vinyl coated surface of wall portion 18 and therefore may be heat sealed to said wall portion. The heat sealingof said parts of the pocket16 to wall portion 18 is performed in one operation resulting in the securement of end portions 40 and the rear wall 26 of the pocket to the wall portion 18. The manner in which the heat sealing operation is accomplished is believed to be obvious to those skilled in the art, but it may be noted that the operation is performed while the blank for the main walls 12 and 14 are in flat unfolded condition and that a metal plate forming one electrode of the electronic heat sealing apparatus is inserted within the pocket after the gussets are positioned outwardly of the pocket, said electrode forming plate conforming to the outline of the rear wall 26 of the pocket blank 16A, and the opposite side of the flat blank which provides the walls 12 and 14 is positioned within the shallow metal tray which constitutes the other electrode of the electronic heat sealing machinej Itwill be understood, however, that the art of heat sealing is well understood and'the specific heat sealing employed for securing the pocket 16 to the wall portion 18 of the billfold is obvious to those skilled in the art and therefore does not require any detailed description, as it does not per se form part of the present invention apart from the construction of the pocket 16 to enable the heat sealing operation to be performed.
While I have shown and described the presently preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied otherwise than has herein been specifically illustrated and described, andthat in the form of the invention herein illustrated certain changes in the details of construction and in the arrangement may be made and will occur to those skilled in the art in view of the present disclosure. Accordingly, I do not wish to be limited to the form of the invention herein specifically described except to the extent which may be required by the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a wallet, billfold or the like having a compartment which includes a wall member having a surface of heat scalable material, a pocket member mounted on said surface and having inturned perforated end portions overlapping each other provided with surfaces of heat scalable material, said surfaces of heat scalable material confronting the heat'sealable material of said wall member, said perforations being registered with said position, said pocket having a front wall and gussets integral with said front wall at the opposite ends of the pocket and disposed between said inturned perforated end. portions and the adjacent ends, respectively, of said front wall, said integral part of said pocket being disposed at the inner side of said front wall.
2. In a wallet, billfold or the like having a compartment which includes a wall member having an outer surface of heat scalable material, a pocket mounted on said outer surface and having a front wall, a rear wall and end gussets provided with extensions disposed, between said rear wall and said wall member and having heat sealable material heat sealed to said heat scalable material of said wall member, rivet means positionally affixing said extensions to said wall member, said rear wall being heat sealedto said extensions of said gussets and to said wall member.
ment which includes a wall member having a surface of heat sealable material, a pocket member mounted on said surface and having a front wall and rear portions provided with surfaces of heat sealable material overlapping said wall member and heat sealed thereto, rivet means for positionally aifixing said rear portions to said wall member, said pocket having a part integral with 3. In a'wallet, billfold or the like having a compartsaid front Wall and 'folded inwardly within said pocket and heat sealed to said wall member in position over said rear portions for securing them in said position on said wall member, said pocket having integral gussets at the opposite ends thereof and disposed between said rear portions and the adjacent ends, respectively, of said front wall.
