To call whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, PATRICK GLEEsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrotype and Stereotype Blocks, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 represents one of my improved blocks for mounting electrotype or stereotype plates in perspective, and in which the lower half of the metal plate or electrotype is broken away, also about one'half of each of the removable side clamps are removed so as to show the construction of the block and parts beneath and behind them. Fig. 2 is a crosssection of Fig. 1 on the plane as :r. Fig. 3 is an interior view of one of the clamping-plates 6. provided with pins j instead of tongues f. Fig. 4 shows the construction of the edges of the plate a and clamp 6, with its claw d and pin j in place of groove f.

In the drawings, (t represents an electrotype-plate lying upon a block, b, and the hindin h.

'Ihe edges of the plate a are beveled inward toward the top from the lower edges, so as to fit under the inturned or hooked edges d of the clamps c c. Said clamps c 0 form a frame around the block b and binders h, of which the two upper and contiguous plates or sides, 0, may be permanently secured to the block b, and the lower ones, 6, are made so as to be removable, and are provided with one or more tongues f upon their inner sides, which may run along their entire length parallel with the base and fit into grooves 9, out in the sides of the binders or block I). Said block b is preferably bound with metal plates h, either permanently secured or made so as to be removable, and provided with grooves g. Said parts are so made that the hooks (I will be slightly below the printing-surface of the plate a, and so that said hooks cl will press firmly on all the edges of the plate a when the form is locked in the chase.

In place of the tongue f and groove g, pins j, fixed to the plates o c, and fitting into ened to the block or binders; or any equivalent device may be used which will hold the plates or frame 0 e securely to the binders h or block b, so that they cannot work upward whenlocked in the chase, and so as to cause said plates 0 c to assume their proper place automatically as the form is locked. When, therefore, it is desired to replace or readjust the plate a in the form, it is only necessary to unlock the form sufficiently so that the edges or claws (I may be thrown outward far enough to release the edges of the plate a, which may then be lifted from the block and readj ust-ed or replaced by another, which may then again be securely locked into its place without any other trouble than simply locking the form. This locking of the form will cause the clamps o e to assume their former place without fail, especially when constructed as here shown. The lower edges of the clamps 0 e are here shown to rest on the bedplate. Such construction is preferable with a tongue and groove; but any equivalent device which will permit the claws d to open and close into their desired position auto matically by locking the form, and thereby se- .curely hold the plate a, will answer the purpose of my invention.

Obviously, all four of the claws d and binders h may be made removable, and in either of the cases above mentioned the object of my invention will have been accomplished-- namely, the construction of mechanism to secure an electrotype or stereotype plate upon a block.

What I claim is- 1. The electrotype or stereotype plate a and block b, of about equal area whereof the edges of the plate a are beveled upward and inward, as shown, and hooks d, formed of the upper edges of the plates 0, and removable plates 6, fitting upon said beveled edges of the plate a and provided with mechanism, substantially as described, which will automatically bring the hooks (1 into their proper position by the action of the locking mechanisrn of a form in a chase, substantially as and with tongues f, fitting into grooves 9, subspecified. stantially as specified.
