Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 205,268, dated June 25, 1878 application led May 25, 187e.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AMANnUs HENNING, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Stereotype- Block, of which the following is a specification:

The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.

When stereotype-plates are secured to their blocks by the common method, and it is desired to adjust one of them in a form, itis necessary to unlock the entire form, thereby e11- dangerin g the arrangement of the other blocks in the form, so that it frequently becomes necessary to readjust the form.

Another difficulty common to the ordinary method of holding stereotype-plates is, that the face of the plate, near its edges, is often injured by the tools employed in fastening the blocks and locking the form.

To obviate these difculties, and to furnish a means of securely fastening and easily adjusting the plates after the form is locked, is the aim of my invention.

In the drawing, A represents a block, of suitable thickness, for supporting the stereotype-plate B, and C C are adjustable jaws upon the upper surface of the block. In the present example there are two jaws near each side, and one near each end; but I do not conine myself to this number or arrangement. Each jaw O is pivoted to a follower, D, that slides in ways formed in the block, and is supported and guided by a pin, a, that slides in a hole formed in the body of the block. The follower D is offset and beveled to adapt it to awedge, E, which slides in a casing formed in or attached to the side of the block. The wedge carries a rack, e, upon its outer side, which is engaged by a pinion, F, whose squared arbor extends upward through a hole in the top plate of the block to receive a key, by which the clamping device is operated. The wedge has in its under side a slot, which is parallel with the rack, for receiving a guidepin, b, that projects from the wedge-casing. In the upper side of the wedge there is a slot, c, for receiving a pin, d, that projects from the under side of the follower D.

By turning the pinion so as to throw the wedge forward the jaw O is carried toward the middle of the block, and by turning the pinion in the opposite direction the jaw is retracted by the engagement of the pin d by the slot c.

The face of the jaw that engages the edge of the stereotypeplate is undercut to correspond with the beveled edge of the plate.

It will be observed that the jaws will accommodate themselves to the edges of the plate, whether the latter be arranged parallel with the sides of the block or diagonally.

It will also be seen that the plate on any block in a form composed of my improved blocks may be adjusted without disturbing any of the others. l

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the block A, of the pivoted jaws C, sliding followers D, and sliding wedges E, operated by rack and pinion, as and for the purpose specified.
