ADJUSTABLE RGBEG SEUR Neil L. Garrett, 70 N. 1st EV Neplai, Utah Filed Aug. 7, 1963, Ser. No. 309,568 4 Claims. (Cl. 54-83) This invention relates to an improved spur for rodeo riders.
It is a primary object of the present invention to provide an adjustable rodeo spur which will be used in all rodeo events, thus eliminating the necessity for the riders owning two or three pairs of spurs and consequently minimizing the gear.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable rodeo spur which will have set screw means for changing the angle of the spur shank.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable rodeo spur which will allow the shanks to be interchangeable in the event the rider desires a longer or shorter shank.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide an adjustable rodeo spur bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efiicient in operation and use.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a top plan view showing a right foot spur comprising the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a view taken along the lines 22 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a plan view of the spur band before being formed to shape; and
FIG. 4 is a plan view showing the head of the mounting screw.
Referring to the drawing, an adjustable rodeo spur made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include an elongated rectangular band 12 bent into a U-shaped configuration having a pair of hingeable strap buttons 14 fixedly secured to the exterior for securing spur 10 to the riders foot. A pair of flange-headed, tie-down pins 16 are fixedly secured to the exterior or band 12 near the lower extremity of band 12. An otfset rectangular slot or opening 18 through band 12 provides a means for adjusting spur 10. A spur shank 20 is secured to the arcuate exterior of band 12 by means of set screw 22 which has a hexagonal opening 24 for the insertion of an allen wrench. The butt of shank 20 extends partially into opening 18 and the edges of opening 18 are bevelled, thus matingly engaging the bevelled periphery of set screw 22. Set screw 22 is threadingly received within threaded opening 26 of shank 20. A star-shaped rowel is secured within elongated slot 30 of shank 20 by means of a rowel screw 32 received through the center of rowel 28. Rowel screw 32 is received transversely through the end of shank 20, and a transverse pin 34 abuts with one of the points of rowel 28, thus preventing the rotation thereof.
In operation, the rider when he wishes to change the angle of shank 20 inserts an allen wrench within the opening 24 of set screw 22 and loosens it by rotating in the well known manner. The rider then grasps the shank and slides it within opening 18 so that the rowel 28 is positioned to a desired setting in a direction toward the animal which may vary with the riders taste, and the event in which he is riding.
It will be recognized that shank 20 is slidable from the center of band 12 toward the inside of the riders foot.
It shall be further noted that shanks 20 are inter- While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An adjustable rodeo spur comprising, in combination, an elongated rectangular U-shaped band made of steel or other suitable material, a pair of hingeable strap buttons carried by said band providing securement means for said spur to a riders foot, a pair of tie-down pins carried by said band and a shank with a rowel carried by said band providing means for spurring an animal, said shank having a relatively large end and a relatively small end, a set screw having a beveled outer periphery and carried by said band providing adjustment means and removable means for said shank, a stop pin providing stop means for said rowel carried by said band, said strap buttons being secured externally and forwardly of said band and said tie-down pins being secured to said bands externally and rearwardly of said strap buttons on the lower extremity of said band, said band being provided with a rectangular and bevelled opening extending arcuately from the center of said band toward one side and said opening engaging with the beveled outer periphery of said set screw and said set screw providing a means for securing said shank to said band and providing angular adjustment of said shank toward the animal to be ridden.
2. An adjustable rodeo spur according to claim 1 wherein said set screw is provided with a hexagonal central opening providing a means for the insertion of a wrench for loosening or tighten ng said shank to said band of said spur, and the larger end of said shank is received within said opening of said band partially and the shoulders thus formed on the large end of said shank abut with the outer arced curve of said band, thus providing positive rigid holding of said shank to said band, and said set screw is threadingly received in the large end of said shank.
3. An adjustable rodeo spur according to claim 2 wherein a star-shaped rowel is freely and rotatably received upon a transverse rowel screw received in the small end of said shank and a transverse pin abuts with one of the points of said rowel and thus prevents the rotation of said rowel within the U-shaped slotted opening vertically through said shank.
4. An adjustable rodeo spur according to claim 3 wherein said shank containing said rowel is radially adjustable from the center of the semicircular curve of said band and said rectangular and bevelled opening through said hand extends from the center of said arcuately curved portion of said band toward the inside of the riders foot, thus providing angular adjustment of said shank with respect to said band.
