CIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 312,143, ated February 10, 1885.
Application filed May 13, 1884.
(No model.)
. .T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRIGK MCCAULEY, of Braddock, in the County of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have inventel certain new and useful Improvements in Fire- Fronts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to IO make and use the same, reference being had to the acoompanyiug drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to fire-fronts-suoh as are usually made of cast-iron and Set in front of the mantel for protection against fire; and the invention consists in the combina ion. with the fire-front,of au inwardly-projecting fiange made removable and provided With lugs having holes for the passage of bolts by which the fiange is secured to the fire-front.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figurel is an elevation of the fire front; Fig. 2, a Vertical section of the fire-place with my improvement :in position, and Fig. 3 a per spective view of the removable fiange.
A designates the fire-p1ace, B the breast thereof, and G the flue or chiinney. D is the mantel,or that portion ot' it immediately over the fire-front, which is designated by F. The
0 grateis located at the point G, as usual. In these fronts the back is usually in shape the reverse of the front face-that is, of a more or less fiat shape. This is placed against the fireplace jambs and top, and When unprovided with a flange leaves a crevice between the front and its rear support, which becomes a source of annoyance from Smoke creeping through the crevice and defacing the Inautel, and also a source of danger where the mantel is of wood,on account of the possibility of fire.
l By myinvention, however, I avoid all possibility ot' defacement and danger, and for this purpose I employ the flange a, cons sting of a cast arch. which eXtends across the greater part or all of the fire-front opening, as shown 4 in Fig. 1, and Springs from near the inner lower edge ot' the same, thereby constitutiug a deflector, and also a sort of shelfor support. The flange a, for the purposes of attachment to the fire-front, is cast With lugs BC pierced 5 for the passage of bolts, which also pass through and are fastened to the fire-front. If any crack eXiSts at the juncturc, it may be closed by a little mortar or cement and a Smoke-proof union effected. In some cases it 5 will be desirable to fill in on top of the flange With mortar, Cement, or equivalent material, as shown at g in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
By the provision of a detachable flange I am enabled to apply Iny improvement to any 6 of the Ordinary fire-fronts, andthus save the expense of an eutirely' new fire-front whensome expedient becomes necessary to prevent the eseape of Smoke between the front and the mantel. I ani also enabled to replace old 6 flanges which have become burned out at a trifling expense.
hat I Claim as my invention iS-- The combination, with the fire-front F,of the removabie flange a, having lugs B', and at- 7 tached to the fire-front by bolts, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I Claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my Signature in presence of two witnesses.
PATRICK MCCAULEY.
